When you’re looking for your next job, it’s important that you make time to check your e-mails and voicemails frequently, and reply to potential employers promptly. At various stages during the application and interview processes, you may not be the only candidate for a single opening, and how well you keep pace with the process can make all the difference.

If you’re working during your search, make sure you take time on breaks, at lunch, and when you get home to see if you’ve missed any communication from companies to whom you’ve applied.

It’s also important to make sure that you’re checking your e-mail provider’s SPAM folder. Because a lot of actual spam messages contain keywords related to employment, legitimate messages will sometimes end up there. I once had an offer letter sit in my spam folder for a few days before I checked there. Fortunately the position hadn’t been filled!

Staying on top of your communication during the search process shows your next boss that you’re the kind of person that they can depend on, and may make all the difference!
