Job Description:
The Public Relations and Marketing Director is responsible for developing and implementing Water Missions International’s overall strategic public relations program with the goal of increasing awareness of its mission and the work it makes possible, the engagement of the volunteer and donor base, and the thought leadership provided by senior professionals and
volunteers. The Director will be a part of a team of professionals who serve as a resource throughout the organization for press outreach, media events, media calls, crisis communication, and press material development. The Director will develop and manage PR efforts that positively position Water Missions International and drive or align closely with all other external activities,
using communications tools and practice, to reinforce the organization’s messages and help raise funds for water projects throughout the world.

Job Purpose
The Public Relations (PR) and Marketing Director will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing all Water Missions International’s (WMI) marketing strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities to local, national, and international audiences. He or she will oversee the development and implementation of support materials and
will coordinate at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functional areas of the ministry.

Primary Relationships
This position reports to the Volunteer and Investor Partnerships (VIP) Division Head and works with various leaders of the ministry to develop and implement a “best in class” PR/Marketing program. Within WMI, the position has primary working relationships with the VIP Division Head and development staff. Outside the organization, the position coordinates primarily with the media.

Principle Responsibilities
• Create, implement, and measure the success of a comprehensive PR/Marketing program
that will enhance WMI’s image and position with local, national, and international
• Consistently cultivate strategic relationships and work closely with key media
influencers, reporters, journalists, producers, and editors to ensure Water Missions
International has a prominent voice and is highly visible on key strategic issues of
importance to the organization
• Deepen and extend media exposure for the organization by identifying and executing
story ideas that garner media placement, byline articles, op-ed pieces, etc.
• Serve as the official spokesperson for WMI, and assume direct responsibility for
managing the drafting or reviewing of press releases, policy statements, positioning and
talking points, and strategic and tactical communications plans to increase visibility and
stature of the organization and its key officers
• Provide communications counsel to senior management, helping to enhance the
organization’s success by applying proactive and reactive communications strategy,
including crisis communications and breaking news
• Provide consultative crisis-management intervention and support to our network of
• Oversee the direction, design, production, and distribution of WMI’s publications, ecommunications
and branding
• Ensure that the organization regularly conducts relevant market research and monitors
• Lead projects as assigned, such as cause-related marketing and special events
Planning and Budgeting Responsibilities
• Ensure that the PR/Marketing program’s missions, goals and financial objectives are
achieved. Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives
and report progress to the Volunteer and Investor Partnerships (VIP) Division Head
• Develop short- and long-range plans and budgets for all PR/Marketing program activities,
monitor progress, and evaluate performance
• Keep informed of developments in the fields of PR/Marketing, nonprofit and governance,
and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

Organizational Strategy Responsibilities
• Help ensure that the organization’s core values, mission and vision are practiced
throughout the organization
• Develop and coordinate means to seek regular input from WMI’s key constituencies
regarding the quality of communication and feedback they are receiving
• Act as an internal consultant to bring attention and solutions to institutional priorities

Leadership Responsibilities
• Maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates top quality personnel, both paid
and volunteer
• Ensure effective leadership within the PR/Marketing program, including provision for
• Supervise and provide strategic direction for the Social Communications Coordinator
• Effectively enable volunteers and staff so they can take action on behalf of Water Missions International by:

o Communicating the organization’s values, mission and vision
o Engaging people in securing active stories and feedback from the field
o Respecting and using the skills, expertise, experience, and insights of people
o Providing direction and resources, removing barriers and helping develop
peoples’ skills, articulating expectations, and clarifying roles and relationships

o Asking strategic questions to ensure quality decision-making
o Engaging people in processes as well as tasks
o Encouraging people to grow professionally
o Modeling behavior and coaching people to success

Required Qualifications
• Minimum of 5 years experience in PR/Marketing with demonstrated success, preferably
in the not-for-profit or association sector
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, or public relations. Graduate degree in a
related field is desirable
• Knowledge of issues facing water scarcity and water related issues in less developed
• Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the design and execution of
PR/Marketing activities
• Proven track record developing strong, positive relationships with targeted press
Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, making presentations and
media interviews
Strategic thinking and proven experience developing and executing on original ideas;
ability to proactively identify communications opportunities and develop supporting
• Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to shape
the story and manage the message
• Experience developing and managing budgets, and hiring, training, developing,
supervising, and appraising staff
• Computer literacy in word processing, data base management, and page layout
• Experience managing multiple projects at the same time
• Able to excel in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and take a positive
team approach to working with internal and external partners
• Excellent presence, with the ability to quickly gain the respect of the senior leadership
team and emerge as a strategic counselor and advisor
• Experience working with volunteers is desirable
