Our nonprofit client, Food for the Hungry, has recently retained our executive search firm to assist in locating a Chief Development Officer to lead the organization’s global fund development and expansion efforts around the world.
Food for the Hungry (FH) is a Christian relief and development organization serving the poor globally since 1971, reflecting the love of Christ in short-term emergency relief and long-term community transformation. FH walks with leaders, churches and families in more than 26 countries around the world…off the beaten path, hard places where daily survival is a lifelong struggle. In 2010, more than 2,000 desperate communities around the world received life-saving help in their time of need. In the US last year, the organization raised nearly $100 million ($70 million in cash, $30 million in gifts-in-kind), which was distributed worldwide in the following need areas: child sponsorship, food and agriculture, water and sanitation, health and nutrition, education, economic development, and emergency relief. By the end of the fiscal year, FH had served 2,458,533 people with relief and development activities that helped build thriving, and sustainable communities.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, with substantive functional responsibility to the US President, the Chief Development Officer will be responsible for leading the global fundraising, marketing and communications functions for FH and will provide best practices in areas of fundraising, direct response, marketing, social media, branding and public relations. He/She is ultimately responsible for private resource development generated across all channels. This position is part of a collaborative team that provides organizational oversight, to ensure effectiveness and growth. Engaging donors is the heart of this ministry work.
We seek an individual with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in either nonprofit or for-profit, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role leading a team greater than 15 people. The candidate must be seasoned in design and execution of a strategic plan in a complex environment with multiple offerings and multiple channels. The ideal background will consist of a strong knowledge of fundraising principles and a broad background in fund development with particular strengths in the following areas: child sponsorship, major gift development, direct response marketing, and corporate communications. The Chief Development Officer must have experience with P&L and budget responsibilities of more than $20 million annually. The selected candidate will be a strong, spiritual, and executive leader who shares the passion and conviction of their mission.
