Provides legal analysis and guidance on Compassion activities to the Board of Directors, senior leaders, and key professional staff. Directs Compassion's legal affairs, domestically and internationally, providing specialized counsel and expertise on matters including but not limited to contracts and agreements, compliance, policy, employment and labor law, funding, litigation management, copyright and trademark issues, and regulations and restrictions pertaining to tax-exempt status. Will develop organization's legal department and related processes.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
> Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Compassion, and faithfully upholds Compassion’s ministry in prayer.
> Acts as an advocate for children – raising the awareness of the needs, neglect, nurture, and potential of children in poverty and challenging and enabling those within one’s influence to greater involvement and effectiveness on behalf of children.
> Provides overall leadership and coordination for Compassion's legal department and activities. Renders legal analysis and guidance on Compassion activities, including but not limited to, all vendor/consultant agreements, leases, litigation, compliance, employment and labor law issues, copyright and trademark issues, and regulations and restrictions pertaining to tax-exempt status.
> Establishes relationships and works with in-house and outside attorneys to provide counsel to all senior management and to obtain technical assistance and pro-bono legal services in all areas affecting the organization, including intellectual property, publishing, real estate, labor, litigation, tax, and not-for-profit law both in the USA and internationally.
> Drafts and/or reviews legal documents, including commercial leases and contracts, charitable registrations and compliance, and technology-related work, including internet service provider contracts, and negotiates the terms of such agreements.
> Monitors corporate governance including reviewing and monitoring Compassion Bylaws, ensuring compliance with Bylaw provisions, and recommending adjustments, where needed, to comply with IL, CO, and federal non-profit corporation laws.
> Advises on other legal matters, such as employment law and audit components, supports international offices on compliance and regulatory issues, and serves on regular or ad hoc committees as required.
> Develops in-house legal team and related processes. Oversees staff and directs activities.
> Develops and presents relevant internal policy training materials.
FUNCTIONAL JOB COMPETENCIES
> Strong analytical ability and adeptness at identifying and analyzing complex legal issues while providing advice based on a nuanced understanding of Compassion that results in devising the best solutions for the ministry.
> Excellent interpersonal communication and teamwork skills. Ability to articulate complex issues to a broad audience of management.
> Ability to work with senior leaders and board of directors and command respect while maintaining a servants heart towards tasks.
> Self starter. Must instill confidence and demonstrate technical skills required to lead this function.
> Leadership characterized by integrity and honesty with an ability to speak the truth with diplomacy and sensitivity. Strong bias towards intercutural relational skills.
> Knowledge of computerized legal research
> Has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
> Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school.
> Ten years legal experience in a government, firm or corporate environment required.
> Currently licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado (or eligible to become licensed within 12 months of hire).
> Other Required Skills: Knowledge and experience in diverse fields of law including contract, employment, copyright, trademark, real estate, publishing, tax, fundraising, and not-for-profit law preferred.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Mainly works in an office environment with some short term exposure to developing nations where living and working conditions may be harsh.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 3-4 weeks international travel per year
