Senior Oracle Database Administrator
Pay Level: Negotiable

The Senior Oracle DBA has a minimum of 7+ years in the production support role of supporting the Oracle databases and ensuring their performance, availability and security.

Designs logical and physical databases or reviews description of changes to database design to understand how changes to be made affect physical database (how data is stored in terms of physical characteristics such as location, amount of space, and access method).

Modifies database programs to increase processing performance, referred to as performance tuning.

To proactively monitor the database systems to ensure secure services with minimum downtime.

Provide trend analysis to the service management team to enable them to make informed decisions regarding resource management.

Escalate of problems to Oracle Support team and third parties as appropriate.

Improve and maintain the databases, including rollouts and upgrades.

Interact with programming team in the design of their applications so they run efficiently and correctly.

Train programmers and analysts on use of the database and answer questions.

Answer questions and investigate problems found by users of database applications.

Analyzes and optimizes Oracle configurations. Sets Oracle parameters to optimal values to maximize database performance. Determines appropriate locations for all Oracle files.

Determine and implement optimal hardware configuration for the databases for critical ministry wide information systems. Recommend purchase of appropriate hardware, and troubleshoot problems with hardware.

Setup client software to connect to Oracle. This involves use of Oracle and PeopleSoft client software, designing file server scripts and ODBC and IP configuration.

Setup hardware, operating system, and database connectivity for application servers such as Peoplesoft batch servers.

Responsible for giving technical users appropriate access to data they need.

Investigates, analyzes and resolves any difficulty related to the databases, and related software and hardware for critical ministry wide information systems. Uses Oracle, Microsoft and other web sites to gather information.

Monitors performance of the databases, and related software and hardware for critical ministry wide information systems. Available 24 hours a day/7 days a week to fix critical problems. Anticipates and preemptively resolves problems such as running out of disk space.

Assures that the database for critical ministry wide information systems is correctly backed up and periodically tests restoration to assure recovery is possible. Performs recovery from backups in the event of hardware failure or other loss of data. Assures off-site backups are current for use in disaster recovery.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES (Non-Essential Functions)
Coaches and trains other team members for secondary support of solutions in areas of expertise.
Consult with other groups to recommend ways they can meet their needs.
Evaluate organizational requirements and recommend changes to meet the goals of the organization.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

This position does not include daily supervisory duties; however it may include some project supervision and mentoring of mid and entry level positions.

Essential Skills:
• A minimum of 7+ years of Proven Oracle Database Administration experience.
• Experience of managing multiple RDBMS on large Unix-base systems,
particularly AIX.
• Experience of working in a team that delivers a high availability service.
• Practical experience in monitoring and tuning a database to provide a high availability service.
• An excellent understanding of the Oracle database, related utilities and tools
• A good understanding of the underlying operating system
• A good knowledge of the physical database design
• Ability to perform both Oracle and some operating system performance tuning and monitoring
• Knowledge of ALL Oracle backup and recovery scenarios
• A good knowledge of Oracle security management
• A good knowledge of how Oracle acquires and manages resources
• A good knowledge Oracle data integrity
• Sound knowledge of the implemented application systems
• Experience in code migration, database change management and data management through the various stages of the development life cycle
• A sound knowledge of both database and system performance tuning
• Excellent communication skills with management, development teams, vendors and systems administrators
• Provide a strategic database direction for the organization
• A proven ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
• Experience of other database systems, preferably SQL Server.
• Proven experience in installation, patching and maintenance of all Oracle software
• Proven experience in instance components including SQL and PL/SQL.
• Work as part of a team and provide 7x24 support when required
• Perform database tuning and performance monitoring
• Perform application tuning and performance monitoring
• Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work with less knowledgeable end-users to troubleshoot and resolve issues
• Write clear and concise documentation
• Perform difficult and complex database administration duties in the analysis of system requirements
• Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Work cooperatively with others
• Meet time schedules and deadlines and plan and organize work
• Work confidentially with discretion

• A minimum of 7+ years of Proven Oracle Database Administration experience.
• BS in computer science or related engineering field
• At least 1 year of Oracle Real Application Cluster administration
• 3 years of IBM AIX and or Linux administration
• Unix shell scripting (csh, ksh, bash)
• 5 years related work experience including technical systems and applications management, design, analysis, and configuration
• Demonstrated extensive working knowledge of systems capabilities including debugging functional problems and providing improved database solutions and performance

Oracle Certification, preferably OCP.
