Job Description:
The Assistant Director for Legal and Legislative Issues will be a member of the ACSI headquarters’ staff. He/She has a reporting relationship to the Chief of Staff/Director for Legal Legislative Issues and will assist him in all Legal/Legislative Issues.

The Assistant Director for Legal and Legislative Issues with assist the Director for Legal Legislative Issues so that:
• current and pending state legislation is monitored to provide ongoing information regarding pending legislation
relating to private and religious schools
• appropriate and current information on legislation is available to Executive Staff and member schools
• legal/legislative strategies are developed effectively with Executive Staff, Legal/Legislative Committee, and legal counsel
• appropriate action is taken in support or opposition to pending legislation which pertains to Christian school education; e.g. lobbying, distribution of legislative alerts and advisories
• Information, initiatives, and actions in relation to national legislative efforts and issues are effectively coordinated
• networking with other appropriate political action groups is attained
• ACSI Legal/Legislative Update effectively informs and educates ACSI target audiences
• articles regarding legal/legislative issues are appropriately developed for other ACSI publications as needed
• appropriate information and referrals are provided to constituent calls
• professional and technical knowledge is enhanced by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
• other assignments as directed by the Director for Legal Legislative Issues are carried out effectively

The Assistant Director for Legal and Legislative Issues would begin to develop a research component for ACSI that would involve creating a reference library of educational dissertations and other research articles that would assist ACSI member school to be more effective.

QUALIFICATIONS --- The ideal candidate shall:
• Have a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree is a plus.
• Have the ability to effectively consult with ACSI constituency regarding issues with legal ramifications, e.g. labor law, zoning, education matters, school disciplinary issues, contracts and appropriately refer for legal counsel
• Have the ability to communicate effectively with legal counsel on behalf of the Association and/or Association constituency
• Have a clear understanding of the Christian school and its role and relationship to local, state, and federal law
• Have an understanding of the legislative process from development to implementation
• Have the ability to recognize the potential impact of pending and current legislation in relation to: religious liberty, various aspects of human resources, wage and salary issues, personal and institutional liability, and faith-based discrimination
• Have a broad knowledge of general constitutional rights and provisions for faith based entities
• Have the ability to communicate effectively regarding legal and legislative issues to the ACSI constituency
• Have the ability to prepare appropriate testimony for legislative hearings regarding issues potentially/actually impacting Christian schools
• Have the ability to articulate the role of Christian schooling as a benefit to the public good
• Have a clear understanding of issues surrounding and be an advocate for “school choice”
• Have the ability to write on legal/legislative issues
• Have disciplined time management skills
• Have effective social and relational skills
• Be effective in oral and written communication skills
• Have a deep understanding and empathy for the Christian school
• Be a team player responsive to the senior staff of ACSI
