Job Description:

Lifewater International is seeking a full-time director of Communications & Development (C&D) to lead the fundraising and communication efforts of the organization. The director is responsible for overseeing the Development and Communications department, which includes planning, executing, tracking and reporting of all fundraising work, as well as directing all external communications of the organization. This position will work out of the company’s office in San Luis Obispo, CA and report to the Executive Director.

The director of C&D will employ strong leadership gifts and fundraising experience to develop and manage the departmental budget and strategic fundraising plan to reach organizational income goals. The director will oversee and manage the C&D team and inspire the entire staff to help develop the organization’s donor base and reputation. Skilled in interpersonal relationships, the director will build and maintain working relationships with major donors (through proposals, reports, phone calls, visits, notes, vision trips, etc.) and manage fundraising partnerships.

Major Responsibilities:

Develop and manage the execution of a strategic fundraising plan to reach the income goals of the organization.

Educate and raise awareness about issues central to Lifewater’s purpose and promote the organization’s mission to the general public and donors through various channels.

Develop overall funding and communication strategies.

Build and maintain working relationships with major donors (through proposals, reports, phone calls, visits, notes, vision trips, etc.).

Oversee specific fundraising programs, including special events, planned giving, direct mail and annual campaign drives.

Manage fundraising partnerships.

Create and manage the Development & Communications departmental budget.

Oversee and manage the Development and Communications department team.

Provide monthly and quarterly reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

Qualifications and Skills:

A mature Christian faith and a shared commitment to Lifewater’s core values as an international Christian organization.

Ability to lead others and to work with foundations, major donors, churches and businesses.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Strong familiarity with grant writing and grant funding cycles within the context of international community development.

Ability to create and execute fundraising and communications strategies working with a team.

Experience in negotiating and soliciting funds in relational settings.

Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.

Bachelors degree and a minimum of three to five years experience in fundraising and communication management within a nonprofit environment.

Proficiency with MS Office and various database applications; knowledge of QuickBooks a plus.
