Director of Technical Assistance

Background Information:
HOPE International has seen a rapid expansion of its microfinance network in recent years now
comprising nearly 200,000 clients across 14 countries. Its country organizations have grown in scale, as
has its specialist Technical Assistance team. We are very excited to see this growth continuing and have
therefore created a new position titled Director of Technical Assistance to support the current and
future growth.

The Technical Assistance team comprises 9 staff and covers the following functions:
• Spiritual Integration
• Reporting
• Internal Audit (with direct line to the HOPE Board)
• Microfinance accounting and business processes
• Microfinance operations and cash flow management
• Savings and Credit Associations
• Administration
• Strategic and Business Planning
• Management Information Systems and Technology

This person will be a strong people manager and team builder who understands the needs of our
Country organizations and how best to serve them. ‘Excellence in Financial Services and
Microenterprise Development’ underlies everything we do. We are embarking on a major investment in
technology to further support our growth – awareness in information technology will be important for
this director.

our staff and with our clients. This person will therefore be able to manage the crafting and promotion
of Biblically-based spiritual integration strategies with the local and Country teams.

The Director of Technical Assistance is responsible to provide the strategic leadership, management,
administration, planning, and organization of the Technical Assistance (TA) team necessary to
accomplish HOPE’s objectives across the global Network in delivering micro financial services.

To promote and fulfill the mission and vision of HOPE International
I. Christian Witness: is responsible for leading the Spiritual Integration function, to maintain a
culture that models Biblical principles and incorporates an intentional and effective Christian
witness in all aspects of HOPE’s Technical Assistance activities;
II. TA Scope and Purpose: is responsible for managing and setting clear, tangible goals for the TA
team to provide high quality technical assistance to the Country organizations, strengthening
their SI, Reporting, Finance, Accounting, Operations, Internal Audit, Strategic and Business
Planning, SCA and MIS services. These goals should ensure that the Countries are enabled to
achieve their collective Strategic Objectives and Annual Targets. Is directly responsible for a
team of 9 persons and a budget of $1M annually.
III. Planning: assists the Director of Programs by conducting a detailed annual planning process to
confirm Country Strategic Plans, SI plans, operational objectives and goals, annual funding
requirements, TA support required, and the establish the TA budget.
IV. Reporting and Prioritization: is responsible for the reporting and analysis of Country financial
services activities including the Programs Monthly Report, the SI Quarterly Report, the PAR
Forecast, and the TA dashboard, to determine Country TA support required and to monitor the
Countries progress towards meeting their Objectives. Balances this with Country requests for
TA support and the output from Internal Audits. Then establishes plans to prioritize, allocate,
coordinate and monitor the technical assistance programs with the Countries;
V. Expansion: Is responsible for providing analysis to support the selection of new Countries for
the expansion of HOPE’s services. Provides initiation and start-up support to new Countries.
Assists established countries in the design of new financial products;
VI. Best Practice: is responsible for the creation of HOPE standards, policies and business processes
in all TA areas that incorporate industry best practice. Ensures the Countries are using these
standards, policies, and business processes to achieve common and consistent models across
the Network, and to maximize the opportunities for effectiveness, efficiencies and cost
VII. Oversight and Compliance: is responsible for the oversight of sound financial practices at the
MFIs, ensure Countries’ compliance with local and international regulations, ensure the internal
audit process, and see that the all programs operate within guidelines set forth by the HOPE
International Board. Ensures the earliest notification to the Director of Programs and the HI
President of any detected case of irregularity, fraud, or malpractice.
VIII. HR Appraisal and Development: is responsible for conducting 360 assessments, annual
appraisals and at least three goal reviews per year for each member of the TA team. Establishes
an annual training and development plan for each TA team member in line with individual
requests and the development needs of the organization. Facilitates lateral learning across
HOPE program and partners, including site visits, sharing lessons learned, and communication of
improvements achieved.

I. Personal confession of faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to the mission and vision of HOPE
II. 5 years experience in providing services or support to international entities,
III. Minimum of 7 years in the microfinance, banking or financial services sector. Field experience in
a senior management role with an MFI preferred.
IV. Strong interpersonal, people management and team building skills;
V. Strong organizational skills, including effective time management and prioritization of
competing demands/multiple deadlines;
VI. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
VII. Excellent English language oral, written, and public communication skills;
VIII. Advanced computer skills;
IX. Willingness to travel in support of the TA objectives,
X. International experience and cross-cultural skills; and
XI. MBA, CPA, or advanced degree in relevant field preferred
