HYGIENE & SANITATION SPECIALIST
Established in 1979, Lifewater International is a Christian training organization that specializes in water development (through shallow well drilling, hand pump maintenance and repair, and biosand filtration), sanitation, and hygiene education. Lifewater trains qualified volunteer field trainers in North America who in turn train Lifewater-selected international partner organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Partners use these skills to provide safe water, sanitation, and hygiene education in local communities. All Lifewater training programs are rooted in participatory development principles and holistic approaches to community transformation.

Lifewater International is seeking a full-time Hygiene and Sanitation Specialist. The Specialist will provide leadership to Lifewater’s hygiene and sanitation programs under the Education & Training Department (E&T). The E&T Department is the technical arm of Lifewater International with the responsibility to develop curriculum in holistic WASH programs, provide training and consultation services to Lifewater volunteer field trainers, international partner organizations, and other collaborating agencies.
The Hygiene & Sanitation Specialist is responsible for providing technical support for the hygiene and sanitation programs at Lifewater International. This includes, but is not limited to, design and testing of hygiene and sanitation training materials, planning and facilitating stateside and international partner training workshops, and supporting the Projects Department in the design and implementation of WASH programs. This position will be supervised by the Director of Education & Training.
-Research and synthesize topics in community health and hygiene, participatory training methodologies, transformational development, and other content relevant to Lifewater’s curriculum.
-Coordinate the hygiene & sanitation curriculum contextualization in line with international partner needs.
-Schedule training workshops for Lifewater volunteer field trainers in collaboration with the Volunteer Programs Department and other E&T Specialists.
-Lead in the development of tools to assess the effectiveness of Lifewater’s stateside and international hygiene and sanitation training.
-Support the Projects Department in developing processes for efficient community hygiene and sanitation program design and implementation.
-In collaboration with the Director of Education & Training and other Specialists, develop hygiene and sanitation training programs for other organizations.
-In collaboration with the Projects Department, provide training and conduct monitoring and evaluation (M&E) for hygiene and sanitation programs among our partners.
Research & Development
-Keep abreast of current principles of community hygiene & sanitation practices and adult learning in order to provide support for Lifewater International WASH programs.
-Research and contribute articles in professional journals and databases on behalf of Lifewater International.
-Establish a growth plan for adding new hygiene and sanitation training programs.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
-Masters in Public Health (MPH), with a specialization in community health and WASH education, or other relevant skills.
-Ability to support Lifewater’s Christian identity and values.
-Familiarity with the integration of Biblical themes into development topics (e.g. care for the poor, justice, stewardship).
-Minimum five years experience working in community health, especially in the WASH sector.
-Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships.
-Minimum one year working internationally – with experience in international service delivery within the WASH sector will be an added advantage.
-Experience in development of teaching materials for adults and adult learning.
-Familiarity with international development issues, strategies and theories.
-Strong analytical, negotiating, communication, and advocacy skills.
-Proficiency with MS Office and Internet use.
-Ability to travel internationally eight to ten weeks per year.
-High level of proficiency in spoken and written English.
