Overview of Organization:
Harbor House (HH) is a Christ centered community resource for the City of Oakland, focusing on the Lower San Antonio District of Oakland. Through twenty interactive programs, HH annually serves approximately 3000 individuals – people of various ages, cultures and backgrounds. HH accomplishes this, through God’s provision with an excellent group of 16 full time and part time staff members and an annual budget of approximately $500,000.
Overview of Position:
The Executive Director (“ED”) is the chief executive officer of Harbor House and as such is responsible for the daily operations of the organization, forward and strategic planning, and governance and policy implementation. As part of carrying out the responsibilities of the position, the ED must seek to ensure that the organization fulfills its articulated mission and vision. The Executive Director must possess skills and experience in strategic planning, fiscal/financial management, fund development, program planning, operations, and organizational development. The ED provides spiritual leadership and support to the community, Harbor House’s participants, and to the staff.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
? Develop, in programs and staff, a focus on bringing HH constituents to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
? Conduct Bible studies and devotional activities with staff
? Guide and support constituents to appropriate congregations for spiritual nurture and sustenance
? Represent HH in its business relationships with outside entities; primary responsibility for negotiating agreements and consummating business transactions in accordance with board policy
? Participate regularly in direct ministry with community constituents
? Communicate the vision of HH through speaking engagements in our supporting community and at large
? Establish strategic relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups, religious organizations, and government officials.
? Provide information, data, analysis, and counsel to the Board on the creation of policies, strategic direction, and the overall governance of HH
? Establish and maintain effective Board/Staff Relations
? When significant decisions arise: present options and analysis of those options (pros/cons, policy implications financial implications, etc.) to Board and/or Staff in a manner that facilitates an effective decision-making process.
? Direct preparation and administration of organizational budget
? Review, maintain and oversee cost effectiveness of overall organizational budget
? Manage HH’s resources effectively; institute and maintain annual budget plan
? Inform the board on a timely basis when budget expenditures exceed budget revenues
? Serve as chief negotiator for loans to HH or for loans pursued by HH
? Assure that funds are dispersed in accordance with contract requirements and donor designations
? Oversee development and implementation of the annual Fund Development Plan
? With Board members solicit major donors and maintain key donor relationships
? Create individual donor cultivation plan and activities
? Oversee proposal writing to foundations, organizations and churches
? Ensure timely and regular distribution of newsletters and appeal letters
? Directs the management of HH’s facilities, including regular maintenance and long-term capital improvements
? Hire staff and oversee staff performance reviews and any corrective action/termination process
? Establish compensation guidelines and salary administration processes
? Review and update personnel policies bi-annually
? Develop a staff development plan that facilitates the growth and development of each staff member
? Provide guidance, leadership and support for program creation, development, and implementation consistent with the HH mission statement and in accordance with budget priorities
? Review programs for effectiveness, productivity and adherence to ministry goals and objectives; provide quarterly reports to the board
? Demonstrates a mature walk with Christ in both personal and professional relationships and is regularly involved in a local church.
? Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited college or university with 7 to 10 years of similar experience.
? Experience managing a budget of at least $500,000 and oversight of a staff of at least 5
? Commitment to HH’s mission and philosophy
? Deep experience in developing, leading, and closing major fundraising activities with major donor fundraising experience
? Experience with urban and low-income communities of color
? Excellent writing and oral skills, including public speaking
? Strong organizational skills: communication, team building, agenda setting, facilitation
? Strong financial management skills
? Strong nonprofit board experience
? Ability to negotiate measurable performance measures and focus team on performance objectives
