Mercy Ships, a global charity, has operated a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. Mercy Ships programs promote health and well-being by serving the urgent surgical needs of the forgotten poor and empowering developing communities. Following the example of Jesus, Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to the poor, mobilizing people and resources worldwide. Our Crew of both professional medical and non-medical volunteers have chosen a very powerful way to share their blessings. We are currently filling Self Funded positions for the International Operations Center in Texas, Mercy Ships Africa Mercy and The Sierra Leone.

We are currently looking to fill a position for Second Deck Officer

DEPARTMENT: Deck Department

REPORTS TO: Master, Chief Officer

SUMMARY: Maintain on board the documents and equipment necessary for the ship to safely prosecute an ocean voyage.

Maintain the ship's portfolio of charts and publications as directed by the Master, so that the ship may prosecute an ocean voyage according to the approved Company itinerary, with due regard to possible need for alternate routes and harbors of refuge.

Ensure the ship is provided with the most current Notices to Mariners for the provided portfolio of charts and publications.

Maintain the provided portfolio of charts and publications corrected to the most current Notices to Mariners provided.

Plan the passages between ports in accordance with the approved Company itinerary, as directed by the Master.

Supervise the maintenance of all navigational and associated equipment, liaising with other departments as required.

Maintain the Navigation Bridge and associated spaces in clean and working condition.

Assist the Chief Officer with material handling, supervision of deck maintenance work and other projects as required.

Assist, as required, with the training of ship's personnel in seamanship, lifeboat, fire fighting, and safety procedures, as detailed in the Company training manuals.

Knowledge of the Company Safety Management System as it applies to responsibilities involved in this position.

Follow all standing, general, and night orders given by the Master, as well as all international regulations.

Emergency duties as assigned according to the posted Muster Lists, which may include but are not limited to:

-- Leading a fire hose team or damage control party

-- Serving as Boat Officer for one of the ship's lifeboats or liferafts

At Sea: As Bridge Watch Officer, manage the assigned Bridge watch team to safely and efficiently navigate the ship in the prevailing circumstances, according to the voyage plan.

In Port: As Duty Deck Officer, represent the Master in all matters of ship's business, including safety management, internally to the ship's crew and department heads, and externally to port authorities, ship's agent, and maritime vendors.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to effectively communicate with sub ordinates and senior management in clear English

At least Certificate of Competency according to STCW 95 Section A-II/1
At least one year of sea-going service as a Navigation Watch Office Officeer

WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work environment for this job may include hazards from moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, electrical shock and vibration. In order to successfully perform this job, the individual must be competent in work site risk assessment and proper hazard mitigation, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
