  • Persons applying for this positon should have previous experience in the position of CDO in a non-profit setting.
  • The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for sharing the heart of the organization with supporters and potential donors. The CDO cultivates revenue streams and avenues for fundraising in order to advance finance while furthering the overall mission of the organization.


Nature and Scope of Position


  • Creates, plans, coordinates and assures implementation of strategies to develop donors and contributions to support the organization, including creating policies that donors can follow, documenting donations, and maintaining accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.
  • Establishes and implements short and long-range resource development strategies, goals, objectives, and strategic planning in conjunction with the CEO and the Board of Directors
  • Develops, in tandem with the finance team, the organization’s resource budget, monitors team performance on a monthly basis and maintains an on-going forecast for year-end projections
  • Defines metrics and measurements that quantify performance against goals and institutionalizes a system for obtaining and reporting those metrics and measurements for resource development
  • Proactively ensures that the organization develops strong long-term relationships with large scale individual, foundation and corporate donors/funders. Personally, builds and maintains key relationships to ensure fund development strategy is achieved
  • Ensures establishment of a diverse donor base of individual, corporate, foundation, and public segments
  • Develops innovative recognition opportunities and materials and events for continuity and donor stewardship in cooperation with the Director of Communications.
  • Responsible for the development of all donor appeal, stewardship and cultivation collateral materials
  • Works with Communications Director to manage marketing, public relations and social media activities for organization to ensure consistent brand usage and messaging
  • Act as an ambassador for the organization by traveling to meet with potential donors and speaking publicly about the organization’s mission.
  • Actively manage and cultivate the organization’s current donor base
  • Works to cultivate, solicit, and steward contributions on behalf of the organization and planned major gifts donors. The CDO assures development and maintenance of appropriate systems to fund development including but not limited to volunteer and donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing and recognition.
  • Works in conjunction with our Project Management Team to understand current projects and should have a comprehensive understanding of current FCW projects in order to communicate them clearly to potential donors. Works with Country Managers in leading overseas “Vision Trips” for current and potential donors. 
  • Assures design and maintenance of donor and prospect records, gift management systems, and informational reports.  Enter all contacts and tracks all donor interaction in E-Tapestry.
  • Seeks to secure, and provide oversight for, development staff in regions operating outside of FCW headquarters.
  • Provides vital input in short- and long-term strategic and operational planning and positioning within the organization.
  • Participates with the chief executive officer, staff and board in charting the organization’s course in fund development; recommends short- and long-range fund development plans and programs that support the organization’s values, mission and general objectives.
  • Keeps informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development as well as the general fields of management and the not-for-profit sector; informs the chief executive officer, development committee(s) and board on current trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy making. Recommends policy positions concerning fund development.
  • Provides general oversight of all of the organization’s fund development activities and the day-to-day operations of the development function. Monitors adequacy of activities through coordination with staff, appropriate committees, and governing body.
  • Annually, evaluates the performance of fundraising volunteers and reports to the executive director with recommendations for board candidacy.  Assures proper planning including goal setting, strategy identification, benchmarking and evaluation to support fund development.
  • The CDO is responsible to provide oversight for volunteer “Regional Development Field Reps” to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization on a local level.
  • CDO must have the ability to make quality public presentations—speaking on behalf of FCW in small and large venues.



Minimum starting salary of $50,000 plus benefits, negotiable based on experience
