Job Description for Minister of Music


Principal Function:


The Minister of Music is responsible to the Senior Pastor and is uniquely responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, developing, evaluating and promoting the musical life of the church. This position directs the following groups: Chancel Choir and instrumental ensembles. The Minister of Music also co-ordinates and supervises accompanists, leader of Adult Handbells and the Director of Children’s/Youth Choirs. As a committed member of Cordele FUMC, the Minister of Music must interact positively with other staff and the laity to support the work and ministry of the congregation in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Regular Duties:


The Minister of Music has a multi-faceted role and must collaborate with the Senior Pastor regarding the selection of music to enhance the worship experience. This includes researching and/or acquiring new music. Furthermore, the Minister of Music must also collaboratively plan for special and seasonal worship services and must coordinate the church music ministry with the church calendar. The Minister of Music will direct the presentation of music by one of the choral and/or instrumental ensembles at weekly services. Recruitment of prospective choir and/or ensemble members of all ages is essential to the future development of the music ministry and is a responsibility of the Minister of Music.  This also includes supervision of leadership for additional music groups such as Youth Choir, Children's Choir, Adult Handbells, Youth Handbells, and Instrumental Ensembles. As such, it is imperative that the Minister of Music be acutely aware of all music programs within the church to ensure that not only adults, but also children and youth, are provided ample opportunities to participate in worship. The Music Library and the instrumental resources of the church are the responsibility of the Minister of Music. This includes but is not limited to: pianos, the organ, an 8-octave handbell set and various keyboards and other instruments, in addition to the sound equipment. The Minister of Music supervises the Church Pianist and Organist and will coordinate schedules as appropriate to ensure musicians are available for all worship services and rehearsals.


Occasional Duties:


 The Minister of Music is responsible for assisting with special events such as weddings, funerals and special celebrations as appropriate. The Minister of Music should plan, coordinate and provide musical opportunities for a variety of instrumental soloists and ensembles which may require the writing and arranging of parts. The Minister of Music shall assist other staff as needed and may on occasion be asked to serve as a community choral leader for special events. The choir robes should be periodically cleaned and inventoried to determine if repair or replacement is necessary. Also, the Minister of Music shall provide input regarding the purchase and maintenance of new music and musical equipment. The Minister of Music will attend Church Council meetings as requested. It is important that this position oversee and manage all relevant budget items to minimize overspending.


Skills and Requirements:


A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Music is preferred.  A minimum of three years experience as a Music Director is required. Commensurate experience will be considered. The Minister of Music must exhibit a high level of professionalism and proficiency in all kinds of music or performance. The Minister of Music must also be comfortable working with all levels of musical skills. Familiarity and the ability to select musical programming in accordance with United Methodist theology and traditions is an absolute must. This role requires demonstrated proficiency in MicroSoft Office and web techniques. Furthermore, this is a leadership position and as such requires an effective leader, communicator and team player with a strong work ethic who possesses an active, outgoing, energetic and enthusiastic personality and lifestyle. Effective oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to multi-task are necessary at all times. It is imperative that the person in this position serve as an appropriate role model to all ages and demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with others while exhibiting courtesy and maintaining confidentiality in all dealings with members of the congregation, staff and the general public. Work must be completed with a high level of accuracy, organization, time management and attention to detail. Prompt responses to requests are a must and a demonstrated ability to resolve conflict appropriately is expected.


Other Characteristics:


This may be designated as a part time or full time position with salary and benefits to be determined by the SPRC. Individual performance will be evaluated annually by the SPRC. Other terms of employment are to be in accordance with the Employee Handbook
