Position Profile

Chief Financial Officer, Finance Group Leader in SIM USA

 

 

Purpose and Focus of the Finance Group

 

The purpose of the Finance Group is to provide exceptional business, financial, medical, travel, corporate insurance and Resource Development Ministry services to the mission to advance Proclaiming the  Gospel, Equipping the Church, and Responding to Need among those where Christ is least known.

 

Those served by this group are:  staff, missionaries, donors, and SIM USA leaders. 

 

This important role provides a challenging opportunity for leadership and strategic analysis, and also to set direction, serve a global organization, and provide financial counsel to decision makers.

 

There is tremendous opportunity to:

-        Take a solid group of people and practices and make them even more noteworthy and respected among peer organizations

-        Engage with peer CFOs in other organizations to set standards and solve common issues

-        Represent SIM as a senior leader of the mission.

 

Because of its integrity in financial matters, SIM USA has been blessed with decades of trust.  Donors, foundations, churches, staff, missionaries and peer organizations experience SIM as a trusted mission.  The breadth of SIM’s ministry initiatives allows donors to invest in several areas of personal interest through one organization, knowing that the funds will be used as directed.  Staff and missionaries know that SIM strives to keep administrative costs under control so that workers are not overburdened with administrative charges.

 

There is a solid team of managers in place to handle the internal operations of the various departments within the Finance Group.  What is needed is a strategic leader to collaboratively set goals and standards, monitor and project financial performance to keep the ministry healthy, and help the president and other leaders accomplish SIM USA’s annual and multiyear strategic outcomes and steward financial resources to help accomplish the purpose of SIM.

 

 

Position Description

 

Title:                          Finance Group Leader, Chief Financial Officer and Vice President

Reports to:              President SIM USA

Location:      Charlotte, North Carolina

 

Scope

-        Direct responsibility for all areas in the Finance Group

-        Member of the Direction Group – senior leadership on strategic direction and issues

-        Outside legal counsel liaison

 

Direct Reports

-        Director of Financial Operations

-        Other areas and people as deemed necessary

 

Works Closely With

-        Leaders of the Go, People, Operations and Stewardship Groups at SIM USA

-        Various department managers

-        Finance Committee and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors

 

Annual Travel Requirement

-        3-4 international trips, 1-2 weeks in duration

-        9-12 trips within the U.S.

 

Primary Responsibility

Hands On

-        Lead the Finance Group, particularly through direct reports, but also by casting vision and sharing information with members of the team

-        Actively contribute toward a good team spirit

-        Serve others by carrying out the authority and responsibility for the Finance Group and its functions: strategy, policy development and operating decisions

-        Ensure the development of current and potential future department leaders in the Finance Group

-        Conduct annual performance assessments and personal development plans of direct reports, and confirm they do the same with all other Finance Group staff

-        Serve as a member of SIM USA’s Investment Committee

-        Act as liaison to the Finance Committee and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors

-        Manage real estate matters, including acquiring and selling property

-        Oversee annual budgeting: recommend parameters, work with leaders as they construct department budgets, present a consolidated budget to SIM USA leaders and the Board of Directors, monitor performance

-        Develop annual plans for the Finance Group that align with and work to accomplish SIM’s Purpose and Mission Statement, and the five-year outcomes and annual plans of SIM USA

-        Communicate with SIM USA personnel in the U.S. and globally about relevant financial, medical insurance, retirement and tax issues.

-        Monitor balance of the Home Staff Pool and support efforts to keep it at an acceptable level

 

Oversight

-        Approve key staffing decisions within the Finance Group

-        Liaison with legal counsel on corporate, contractual, labor law and financial matters

-        Provide risk management through assessment, design, implementation and monitoring of insurable (medical insurance) and non-insurable options (represent SIM at captive insurance meetings)

-        Manage retirement matters such as: legacy retirement plans and funds, retiree medical budget, retirement center financial operations, 403(B) plan, methodology, strategy and policy

-        Oversee audits and recommendations conducted by external auditor as well as audits done by SIM auditors

-        Set the medical insurance plan structure and negotiate with insurance companies

 

Representation

-        Serve as SIM USA’s spokesperson on financial matters

-        Represent SIM in Lucent and other insurance captive arrangements

-        Function as senior executive with banking and credit card services

 

Strategic Planning

-        Provide financial projections

-        Recommend financially responsible staffing levels for SIM USA

-        Assess current financial performance and position and recommend any changes

-        Monitor SIM USA’s salary levels as compared to similar organizations, and recommend any adjustments

-        Monitor SIM business practices—financial, legal and operational—to maintain legal, ethical and biblical standards

-        Support the  U.S. Director as needed, in such things as mergers, significant collaboration or partnerships with other ministries that involve business and financial involvement 

 

Qualifications

Personal

-        Depth of knowledge and practice of applying appropriate Scripture and biblical principles to situations

-        Personal presence that will relate well with SIM personnel, professional service providers and board members

-        Interpersonal attributes, experience and gifts that will foster quick credibility

-        Ability to handle crises

-        Competent listening, verbal and written communication skills

-        Willingness and ability to speak up among peers

-        Capacity to live with and maintain a high level of confidentiality

-        Emotional stability

-        Spiritual and natural gifts that align with responsibilities of the role

-        Healthy lifestyle: physical, emotional, marriage/family, and relational

-        Life-long learner

-        Model for being exceptionally relational

-        Is or willing to be a missionary status

 

Professional

-        Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or the equivalent (CPA preferred)

-        Preferably 4-8 years related experience

-        Literacy with balance sheets, chart of accounts, budgeting

-        Demonstrated experience in complex financial systems and matters

-        Proven experience and ability to work well with executive leadership

-        Established experience leading a team and managing multiple departments

-        Demonstrated experience in designing and executing a strategic plan

-        Demonstrated leadership initiative, while being part of a team

-        Familiarity with issues missionaries face

-        Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint

 

 

Additional qualifications if candidate is coming from outside of SIM

-        Strong faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and history of spiritual growth

-        Regular attender and member in good standing of a local, evangelical church
