Job Summary

It is the primary responsibility of this position to provide classroom instruction to the students of The King’s Academy and direct the orchestra, as well as being a positive role model. Staff should view their role as ministry, helping each student towards reaching their full potential in Christ.

The orchestra courses at TKA are designed to provide students with the opportunity to strengthen and develop their musical abilities. They are challenged to become better musicians by learning proper care of their instruments, expanding their knowledge of musical terms and practices, and working together as a group to produce musical presentations.

In addition to the regular classroom rehearsals, much time is spent in rehearsals, auditions, performances, competitions, and musical productions for both junior and senior high.


Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Develops a curriculum map for each course taught where learning objectives are aligned with California State Standards and the school’s Expected Student Learning Results
  • Uses a variety of teaching methodologies to create an engaging and safe classroom setting where all students are held to high expectations
  • Directs the String Orchestra
  • Teaches 6th grade strings
  • Records the day’s or week’s homework as needed on the school portal for access by students and parents
  • Keeps an accurate record of all attendance and tardies for each student
  • Maintains discipline in the classroom to ensure maximum learning
  • Provides an uncluttered, healthy, and neat classroom that promotes a good learning and working environment.
  • Always keeps an emergency lesson plan and current substitute folder in case of an unexpected absence.
  • Provides an environment where students feel safe to try without fear of ridicule or failure
  • Encourages musical groups to rehearse as a unit and relate to the other students in the group/class
  • Communicates with parents on an “as needed” basis regarding their student’s academic or behavioral status in the class
  • Keeps parents and students informed of upcoming performance requirements
  • Attends the staff and students’ retreat every year, as scheduled by the Administration
  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned


 Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music and/or String proficiency
  • Experience in teaching and directing an orchestra
  • Proficiency in playing piano

Specialized Knowledge in:

  • Experience in directing string music and able to read an orchestral score

Skills and Abilities:

  • Above average skills in planning concerts and directing musical groups
  • Excellent skills in communicating both orally and in written form           
  • Demonstrated ability in working with music groups and in working with other members of the Fine Arts community in major productions
  • Proficient in piano                    
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team with other staff  
  • General knowledge of string orchestra music                        
  • Experience in directing an orchestra, planning concerts, designing programs
  • Basic knowledge of Lighting and Sound beneficial
  • Knowledge of Power Point helpful
  • Knowledge of music notation software helpful (Finale, Sibelius, etc.)

Working Conditions

This position requires that the employee work from Monday – Friday and weekends when necessary. The teacher must be willing to meet with students outside of the regular class time for rehearsals and help. There will be several weekends throughout the school year when the teacher will take students to various competitions:

  • CMEA Solo and Ensemble
  • CMEA Large group
  • ACSI Solo and Ensemble
  • Honor Symphony

Physical Requirements 

The teaching of orchestra requires that the teacher spend a lot of time directing music groups, moving around the group keeping students focused, and helping them prepare for concerts.  There can be long hours during production season and on weekends when the groups travel.  It is helpful if the teacher has flexibility with hours outside of the regular school day. The position can require long periods of time on your feet in directing, etc.
