The primary responsibility for this role will be the management, coordination, and prioritization of API’s strategic development plan. As such, the candidate must exhibit leadership qualities and the ability to direct the efforts of multiple people (including API’s leadership, and development staff members, but also contractors, consultants, and vendors) to accomplish a shared goal. The fundamental goal for the Senior Director of Development will be to attract new donors to API and to cultivate existing donors by moving them up the giving ladder. This overarching goal will frame all of the many tasks undertaken by the person in this position. Other responsibilities include:

  • Implementing API’s strategic development plan; managing, coordinating, and prioritizing all components of the plan.
  • Managing API’s development staff (development manager and director of institutional advancement) and the development calendar, ensuring that all development responsibilities are properly assigned and accounted for among staff members and completed in a timely manner.
  • Overseeing API’s foundation solicitation program and coordinating research, writing, and editing with API’s development manager.
  • Directing API’s individual donor solicitation and cultivation program, including building relationships with donors and donor prospects through letters, phone-calls, and meetings.
  • Overseeing API’s direct mail program including regular communications (solicitations and updates) to current donors and direct mail prospecting campaigns to donor prospects.
  • Coordinating API’s development efforts internally with API’s leadership, with board members, and with outside consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Overseeing 2-3 major dinner banquets each year, coordinating the invitations, donor cultivation, and follow up efforts.

  • Ability to form and build lasting relationships with donors and potential donors

  • Familiarity in fundraising and strategic marketing of a business 

  • General familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Docs, as well as eTapestry and QuickBooks software.

  • Excellent communication skills and a friendly demeanor are critical skills the ideal candidate must possess.

  • Ultimately, and most importantly, the candidate must be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to and be passionate about the mission of API and the principles for which it stands.




Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred


Advantageous experience:

  • At least 3-5 years of fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector, including making direct solicitations and work with foundations.

  • At least 2-3 years of management experience.

  • Past work experience that includes writing, communications, and research (writing samples should be provided).

  • Development leadership and familiarity with outreach strategy are strongly preferred.
