Position Summary


The primary responsibility of the Librarian is the management of The King’s Academy’s Library. This includes the efficient operation and maintenance of the Library Media Center, the development and implementation of a quality library information literacy program, and the management of the library collection.  As a member of the teaching staff, the Librarian partners with teaching colleagues to integrate information, technology, and research skills into the curriculum.  The Librarian is also responsible for overseeing the circulation of cataloged textbooks.


Duties and responsibilities:

Library Department Management   

  • Supervises, trains, schedules work shifts, and directs daily activities of Library Assistants, student aides and parent volunteers
  • Prepares library budget proposal and utilizes approved budget, maintaining an accurate and current accounting of expenditures
  • Generates library records and prepares annual reports
  • Implements approved library policies and procedures
  • Plans for the current and future needs of the Library Department and the Library Media Center

School Library Services 

  • Manages the Library Media Center and establishes an atmosphere that is welcoming, organized, and conducive to quiet study
  • Provides access to and circulation of organized and usable library print and online resources
  • Develops and implements the library information literacy program, preparing in collaboration with teachers full-period library lessons taught by the Librarian
  • Teaches library orientation lessons to new students in grades 7-12, and to all 6th grade students
  • Teaches library information literacy lessons to classes at each 6-10 grade-level, initiating with teachers the scheduling of classes for library lessons in the Library Media Center
  • Presents to classes and individual students appropriate print and online library resources for research projects; develops and distributes subject-area library pathfinders
  • Interfaces with teachers to schedule their classes for reserved periods in the Main Library and Library Lab, and maintains the library online reservation system
  • Promotes reading, lifelong learning skills, and the effective use of library resources
  • Provides readers’ advisory services to students, staff, and parents

Library Collection and Textbooks 

  • Manages library collection development and maintenance, which includes library research databases
  • Manages the Library Online Catalog, which includes the library patron database, library materials database, and library textbook database
  • Catalogs and circulates library materials, student textbooks, and classroom-set textbooks
  • Plans, organizes, and manages fall textbook distribution, semester textbook circulation, and spring textbook collection
  • Conducts inventory of library collection throughout the school year and inventory of textbooks at the end of the school year
  • Organizes and secures textbook storage, including the library summer textbook depository in the Library Media Center 


Meetings and Events  

  • Participates in professional development conferences and webinars, library seminars, and library association meetings, as well as the reading of professional library journals, library listservs, and library blogs
  • Initiates and leads annual academic department meetings in the Library Media Center that include information and training on library print and online resources
  • Attends all-staff meetings, staff forum meetings, department lead meetings, teacher In-service days, annual staff retreats, and school open house events


  • Promotes the library mission and philosophy to the school community
  • Informs the school community of library news and events throughout the school year, and maintains the library information on the school website
  • Communicates with students, staff, and parents regarding their library usage and needs



Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or equivalent
  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) preferred
  • College coursework and professional development in library science required, with an ACSI Library Media Specialist Standard or Professional Certificate preferred
  • Five (5) years of experience in school library management preferred


Specialized knowledge

  • Computer and Internet usage
  • Library software proficient, (proficiency in Follett library software preferred)
  • Cataloging (MARC records) proficient, with cataloging coursework preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Google


Skills and Abilities

  • Broad knowledge and experience in library management
  • Attention to detail
  • Advanced Communication skills (oral and written forms)
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and organization
  • Experience in supervisory duties
  • Ability to multitask

Working Conditions:

 This position requires that the employee work from Monday –Friday and weekends when necessary.
