Required travel         Frequent local driving (Portland Metro Area)

Reports to                  Executive Director

Salary                         $50,000 to $60,000 (Depending on experience)




The focus of this position will be cultivating and growing Birch Community Services’ donor base. The Development and Communications Manager will:

  • Serve as a contributing member of the BCS Executive Management Team.
  • Serve as point person and overseer of all development activities
  • Develop and execute BCS’s annual fundraising plan
  • Manage individual, major, and corporate donor relationships
  • Manage the implementation of SalesForce fundraising software and oversee data entry and gift processing by support staff
  • Work closely with Executive Director and Board in donor acquisition and cultivation
  • Secure financial support from individuals, major donors, foundations and corporations
  • Secure in-kind product donations from corporations
  • Oversee development calendar including tracking funding, managing deadlines, and facilitating communication with donors
  • Act as the staff point person on all development and PR events, including annual fundraising breakfast, and smaller events
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors
  • Work with grant writing consultant to complete various aspects of grants: research, applications, submittals, and reports
  • Coordinate development strategies with leadership team to grow fundraising
  • Oversee and implement web and social media communication for BCS
  • Provide basic graphic design tasks associated with web, email and print collateral
  • Other duties as assigned




  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated fund development experience in a nonprofit
  • Experience and comfort with graphic design of simple promotional materials and presentations
  • Passionate about fulfilling Birch Community Service’s mission
  • Experience with social media and other forms of digital communication as development tools
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and projects, often with tight deadlines, while addressing daily needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Comfort and experience with public speaking and donor relations
  • Experience with donor management databases and other computer software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license
  • 4 Year bachelor’s degree required


  • Familiarity with Portland Metro Area donor community
  • Experience with SalesForce desirable
  • Experience developing strategic plans
  • Experience with Photoshop, Publisher, etc. is a plus
