Job Description:
Thompson-Markward Hall, the Young Womans Christian Home, is seeking an Executive Director who is a compassionate professional with excellent management, organization and communication skills to continue our exceptional one hundred plus year record of providing a safe and affordable home for young women new to the Washington, D.C area. The ideal candidate understands all of the intricacies of managing a household and is mature, experienced and a team player.

The Organization
In 1887 Congress chartered the Young Woman's Christian Home to provide housing for women aged 18 through 34, newly arriving in the city to work or study. One hundred twenty residents are now housed at Thompson-Markward Hall, which was built in 1931. The women who stay at TMH come to Washington for a variety of reasons. Many are congressional interns and staffers, women seeking or starting jobs, and university graduate students. They come from all over the United States and the world, and have often been chosen to participate in enrichment programs offered in the city.

TMH is located on Capitol Hill within walking distance of Congressional offices, many government agencies, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian museums. It is also convenient to the bus and Metro lines and Union Station.

The twelve members of the Board of Trustees of the Home are volunteers, some of whom lived at TMH when they first arrived in Washington. The Home is a non-profit organization, which partially subsidizes the operating costs in order to maintain low rental fees for its residents. Residents must agree to abide by house rules, which include no alcohol and/or drugs on the premises, no smoking in the building, and no male guests beyond the lobby level. In this way, TMH can fulfill the mission of providing a secure, comfortable, attractive and affordable home for young women needing a good place to start their future endeavors in Washington.

Accommodations feature furnished single air-conditioned rooms with telephones and limited weekly housekeeping (linen not included). Two multi-unit baths are located on each floor. Rent includes two meals a day. Residents may use a coin-operated laundry, television lounge, living room with fireplace, library, garden, and sundeck. TMH has 24-hour front desk service and a security lock system. There is no parking lot for residents, but street parking is available for residents who qualify for a D.C. parking permit. The residents stay can be as short as two months and as long as 2 years.

In addition to the Executive Director, TMH has a staff of 15: 1 resident manager, 4 part time assistant resident managers, 4 housekeepers, 4 switchboard operators, 1 building services supervisor and a steam engineer. The food service is contracted to a company named Guest Services.

The Executive Director of TMH reports directly to the Board of Trustees and provides oversight for all aspects of the Home, including staff, maintenance, finances, reservations, buildings and grounds, food services, operations and resident relations. Parking is available for the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director will provide leadership and management to the organization and manage its day-to-day affairs. The Executive Director will:
Implement all policies and actions decided by the Board
Hire, train and terminate, if necessary, all staff
Oversee all phases of building services, food service, building engineer and other miscellaneous contractors
Develop and maintain contact with residents during their stay
Prepare the budget, manage finances, including ledgers, verify accounts payable, compile and send all information related to income and expenditures to the accountant for regular reporting and audits
Administer the pension plan
Provide information to prospective residents and make reservations
Assure and arrange for essential repairs to buildings and grounds
Develop an annual schedule for regular maintenance projects
Assist Board in developing data for major projects
Manage all insurance coverage, including employee benefits, Homeowners, Directors & Officers Liability, etc.

A minimum of two years prior experience in a management role
Experience managing budgets and the finances of an organization
A management style that includes delegation and inclusion
Understands facility maintenance
Comfortable working with computers and proficient in Microsoft Office
Possesses excellent communication skills: written, verbal, listening
Ability to work independently, yet create a team environment
Proven problem solver, able to address conflict when necessary
Demonstrates ability to take the initiative, prioritize, and be resourceful
Ability to be firm, yet caring with staff
Be able to work collaboratively with the Board of Trustees, staff and residents
Enjoys working with details and with people
Possesses a sense of humor
Appreciates and welcomes diversity
Understands Christian values
Brings life experience, high morals, and common sense
