PRINCIPAL

The American Academy (established 1922) is a private, selective co-educational 6-18 school of over 300 students, with English as the medium of instruction. Courses offered lead to a recognized High School Diploma, IGCSE, O, AS and A levels.

The Principal is responsible for the curricular and administrative organization of the whole school, strategic planning and implementation and the maintenance of the Evangelical Christian philosophy of the school.

We are looking for a well-qualified professional educator, conversant with and committed to Christian Education, with proven management experience at secondary level, good interpersonal and communication skills and the vision to further develop and strengthen the school as a Christian witness.

The initial contract is for 3 years, renewable. Benefits include salary and allowances, some of which are taxable (including subsidized pension/medical scheme, accommodation, transport, return annual flight to country of origin), equivalent to Cy40000 which is, approximately, US$85,000 at current exchange rates plus relocation expenses at commencement and termination of the contract.

The Principal is the chief executive of Council. He/she has the responsibility to ensure that the Academy functions within the spirit and the letter of its philosophy and vision, in accordance with Council decisions. Specifically, these give rise to the following generic responsibilities:

1 Effective leadership and communication.
2 Effective management of staff, resources and systems.
3 Exemplary commitment to professionalism.
4 Effective leadership in developing the ethos and spirit of the school as clearly set out in its philosophy and mission statements.
5 Effective line-management of Assistant Principal(s) and Heads of Departments and Principal of the Primary School and any other senior staff as may be appointed by Council.
6 Effective co-ordination of delegated whole-school aspects or activities
7 Support to Council committees.

The Principal works closely with the Executive committee of the Council and reports to full Council at regular intervals. He/she has the responsibility of putting into practice policy decisions arrived at by Council and, as the senior expert on Educational matters in the school, advises Council on Educational policy. He is also invested with the authority of Council in the implementation of Councils policies.

Consequently, the Principal has the responsibility of the efficient and effective day-to-day working of the Academy and management of the educational and administrative staff. Specifically these responsibilities include the following:

8 Recommending new policies and policy changes to Council
9 Implementing the policies of the Council.
10 Assisting Council with the preparation and regular review of the Academys strategic plan.
11 Preparing (with the Academy Financial Officer) the annual budgets
12 Preparing a programme for assembly talks, which are in harmony with the school philosophy and mission.
13 Assessing future needs and formulating plans to meet these needs.
14 Meeting regularly with the Council and Council Committees to report and advise on all school developments, including staff appointments and promotion.
15 Supervising (with the Academy Financial Officer) maintenance of the buildings, furniture and equipment and recommending improvements.
16 Planning and managing programmes to promote the schools and attract new students.
17 Supervising admission and placement of prospective students and organizing the entrance examinations in compliance with Council guidelines.
18 Preparing the school timetable.
19 Ensuring student safety and welfare.
20 Ensuring proper discipline of staff and students, in accordance with the school philosophy and aims.
21 Recommending changes in curriculum, its development and implementation.
22 Supervising the selection and ordering of textbooks and visual aids.
23 Appraising staff and ensuring that they are effectively exercising their duties. Making pertinent recommendations to Council.
24 Maintaining systems of communication with parents, faculty, students and Council.
25 Representing the Academy and the Council in meetings and activities with the Ministry of Education and Culture and other Government bodies, the various organizations and bodies related to or connected with the schools in Cyprus and, generally, the wider community.
26 Other specific responsibilities as may be assigned by the Council in connection with its general operations.


Specific Qualities Required for the post

Council strongly believe that the Academy is regaining its leading position in Nicosia and will continue to grow under the professional leadership of an energetic, dedicated and enthusiastic Principal who can assist Council in the further development of a successful Strategic Plan for growth, based on the Academy vision as stated earlier in this document.

The successful candidate must have evident gifts of sound leadership, administration and financial good sense. He/she must also have strong inter-personal skills, being able to build bridges with the local community, and (if a foreign national) being able to 'pick-up" readily Cypriot cultural sensitivities.

Last, but not least, the successful Principal must be known for his integrity and Christian character - thus commending the schools vision with his own personal deportment.
