VISION STATEMENT

The ministry of cultivating faith in children and youth is a priority of our congregation. In our ministry to children, we seek to provide experiences where each child comes to know the love of God through Jesus Christ, learns to trace the great story of redemption throughout the Scriptures, and discovers his or her place in the family of faith. We are also committed to guide young people toward knowing and following the Lord Jesus Christ as his disciples. In an atmosphere of openness, trust, and meaningful relationships, we pray that Gods Spirit will nurture faith, answer doubts, and guide young people to live out Gods calling in their lives.

The DYCM will, as a primary emphasis, nurture Jr. and Sr. High youth in their commitment to Jesus Christ, both through the cultivation of personal relationships with youth and their families, and through meaningful programs that equip youth with foundational experiences in prayer, Bible study, worship and mission. In addition, he or she will facilitate faith formation in children by administering Christian formation programs such as Church School, Logos, and Vacation Bible School, and by providing leadership and training to their respective lay teams.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the DYCM is to lead Jr. and Sr. High youth toward authentic personal faith, and to give encouragement and oversight to programs that nurture faith in children. In both aims, developing capable teams of lay volunteers will be a central focus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with the pastoral staff and the Nurture Division to articulate the theological foundations for Christian Formation, outline a comprehensive vision of faith formation for children, youth and their families, and provide a climate of teamwork, unity, and prayerful purpose in all programs serving children and youth.
With the Nurture Division, develop, train, and be a resource to teams of lay members in the leadership of Christian Formation programs.
Assume primary responsibility for ministry to Jr. and Sr. High youth. Envision, plan, implement, and evaluate this ministry, working closely with members of the Youth Ministry Team.
Provide oversight and ongoing training to lay teams who lead ministries to children in Church School, Logos, and Vacation Bible School.

SPECIFIC TASKS:
1. Logos
Attend a Logos Leadership Training School.
Serve on the Logos Board to provide support in administration and communication.
Provide direction and act as a resource to lay members serving in Logos.
Participate in Logos special events as requested by Logos board.

2. Church School
Assist the Nurture Division and the Superintendent to oversee the church schools nurturing of children, ages three through high school.
Participate in training opportunities for teachers as requested by the Nurture Division.
Work with Nurture to select and implement curriculum

3. Vacation Bible School
Assist the VBS task force in the selection of VBS curriculum with the approval of the Nurture Division.
Assist the Nurture Division in the calling, training, and support of the VBS Co-Directors and staff.
Provide additional consultation and support as requested.

4. Youth Connection
Together with the Youth Ministry team, plan weekly meetings with Jr. and Sr. High youth that include prayer, Bible study, service, worship, recreation, shared meals, and a welcoming community.
Coordinate the contributions of lay volunteers and youth for a multi-dimensional, shared leadership.

5. Youth Ministry
Oversee the selection and evaluation of curriculum.
Assist the Nurture Division in the selection and training of gifted adult leaders.
Develop personal relationships with youth and their families.
Maintain clear communication about events with parents, staff, and the congregation through brochures, announcements, The Light (Newsletter) and Sunday worship bulletin.
Encourage the participation of youth in all aspects of congregational life, particularly worship.
Envision, plan, implement and evaluate additional program components to nurture youth in Christian discipleship, such as Synago groups.
Interpret youth ministry needs and successes to the congregation.
Identify and develop youth leadership.
Take primary responsibility for envisioning, planning, and implementing opportunities for youth to be involved in mission.

6. Special Programs, Classes and Events
Assist in the planning and development of special events involving children and youth, such as Logos Sunday, Youth Sunday, and holiday programs.
Teach Church School, Logos, or family-related Adult Education classes as requested by the Nurture Division.
Participate with ministry teams to provide for the honoring of volunteers.
Promote broad participation of children and youth in camp and retreat opportunities.

7. Administration
Provide for the implementation and annual evaluation of safety policy.
Maintain records necessary for an accurate database of children, youth and parent contact information, volunteer history, and attendance.
Administer the youth ministry budget.
Oversee ordering of classroom supplies and curriculum.

8. Personal and Professional Development
Remain current in trends and research related to Christian Formation and Youth Ministry.
Network, whenever possible, with colleagues in ministry locally and regionally.
Attend continuing education events.
Nourish your soul with prayer, Bible study, Sabbath, and other spiritual disciplines.
Seek accountability from pastoral staff, Nurture Division and Personnel to respect the boundaries of your job description and to work heartily within it.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The DYCM is accountable to the Nurture Division of Session and the Personnel Committee, under the guidance of the Co-Pastors.

RELATIONSHIPS: The DYCM will work with the Co-Pastors, the Nurture Division, and lay teams that serve Church School, Logos, VBS, and Youth Connection ministries. As requested by the pastors or division moderators, the DYCM may attend Session.

COMPENSATION AND WORK SCHEDULE: Compensation, including benefits, will be commensurate with experience. Full time, five-day schedule (TBD). Approximately half of this time may be on weekends and evenings.

REQUIREMENTS:
An active, observable life of faith in Jesus Christ.
A working knowledge of Scripture and its interpretation and application.
Familiarity with the Book of Order of the P.C. (U.S.A.).
Understanding of the principle tenets of the Reformed faith is preferred.
Understanding of and experience in Christian Formation (nee Christian Education).
Willingness to be involved in the life of our worshipping community.
Bachelors degree, with a minimum of 3 years experience (volunteer or paid) in Christian Formation, Youth Ministry, or comparable fields of work.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to work collegially with others as part of a team.
Excellent relational skills with children, youth, and adults.
Oral and written communication skills, including computer skills.

EVALUATION: The DYCM will have a 90-day review, followed by annual reviews conducted by the Personnel Committee, the employee and colleagues.

Applicants selected for further consideration will be presented with added questions for response and will submit three references along with their response.

Finalists will be interviewed by telephone and the apparent successful candidate(s) will be invited to an in-person interview at the church in Snohomish, WA.

Our goal is to fill the DYCM position by April 15, 2006.
