As a pastor, the chaplain of Desire Street Academy will facilitate the spiritual development of all students and staff. Spiritual development includes developing a relationship with Jesus Christ and Christlikeness in all areas of life. This goal will be accomplished via Christian counseling and guidance; Bible teaching and preaching; and the organization of groups, events, and activities intended for Christian evangelism, discipleship, and fellowship.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous, professional attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Desire Street Academy and faithfully upholds the values of Desire Street Academy
2. Acts as an advocate for those held captive by poverty - raising the awareness of the needs, neglect, nurture, and potential of those in poverty and challenging and enabling those within one's influence to greater involvement and effectiveness on behalf of those trapped by poverty.
3. Under the direction of the Principal, the Chaplain/Counselor will act as a spiritual leader/pastor for Desire Street Academy students and staff through the following:
Provides Biblical counsel and guidance to students and staff, encouraging them to develop and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Coordinates events and activities for approximately staff and students designed to deepen student and staffs faith and obedience to Christ such as
o Bible studies
o Discipleship groups
o Morning chapels
o Daily devotional guides
o Prayer groups
o Special events
o Off-campus church attendance
Proactively develops meaningful relationships with students and staff to foster open and honest communication, leading to pastoral care and greater spiritual growth for the students and staff.
Faithfully upholds Desire Street Academy in prayer and encourages others to do the same.
Partners with the Principal and Management Team for continuing development and implementation of the schools vision and values.
Awareness of personal and family issues of students and staff and off-campus visitation and counseling
Development of indigenous leadership development by raising up and discipling young spiritual leaders among the student body.
Connects others in the body of Christ with students and staff for encouragement and support.
Works with the Academic Director and faculty to promote the integration of Christian values and conduct into all subject areas.
Works with the Athletic Director and coaches to promote the integration of Christian values and conduct into all sports.
Works with the Disciplinarian, faculty, and coaches to promote Christlikeness in all areas of student discipline and moral development.
Works with the Boarding Director and dorm parents to promote Christlikeness in all areas of 24/7 care.
Represents and promotes the poverty mandate and Desire Street Academy to the public via guest preaching and other events
4. Under the direction of the Principal, the Chaplain/Counselor will oversee, coordinate, and facilitate counseling services for Desire Street Academy in the following ways:
Addresses the post-traumatic stress felt by staff and students of Desire Street Academy as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
Also addresses issues students deal with as a result of growing up in impoverished neighborhoods.
Assesses the needs of both staff and students and creates appropriate growth plans for each individual.
If necessary, makes recommendations for individuals requiring more complex care than can be provided at Desire Street Academy.
Coordinates and facilitates group counseling sessions for approximately staff and students.
Coordinates and facilitates individual counseling sessions for staff and students.
Proactively develops meaningful relationships with students and staff to foster open and honest communication, leading to proper assessment and deeper healing for the students staff.
Develops an ongoing relationship with clientele through formal (counseling sessions) and informal (between session conversations) interactions.
Demonstrate in depth knowledge of the Bible and of counseling practices and be able to speak the truth in love.
Experience in working with urban youth.
Skilled in coordinating and facilitating group and individual counseling sessions, assessing individual needs, and creating appropriate growth plans.
Proven ability to apply biblical principles to real-life situations and to gently communicate biblical truths to hurting individuals.
Knowledge of resources outside of Desire Street Academy and ability to make appropriate recommendations when necessary.
Degree in theology/pastoral care.
Training in Biblical counseling.
Demonstrated love and loyalty to the body of Christ as expressed through various churches that wish to partner with Desire Street Academy.
Demonstrated organization skills, including ability to delegate to responsible individuals, give clear vision and direction and work well with others.
Ability to work with other biblical counselors
Experience working with senior management.
