Job Description:
ART TEACHER, Part-Time position opening. (12 hrs. per week)

The Summit Academy, a classical-Christian school in Indianapolis, IN, seeks qualified applicant for a part-time Art/Art History Teacher to teach classical Art courses to Early Grammar through Junior High classes. 12 hours per week. Opening begins January 2007 (Second Semester).

Minimum and Preferred Education requirements:
Bachelors degree from a liberal arts college and competency in art and art history required.
Classical art degree or classical college graduate preferred.
Adequate and demonstrable experience in the field of teaching art may be allowed to compensate for above requirements.

Minimum and preferred experience requirements:
Professional teaching experience not required.
Two years teaching experience in some form preferred.

Other requirements:
Must agree with the TSA Profession of faith
Commitment and desire to engage with and contribute to the relational, spiritual, and academic community of The Summit Academy faculty and community.
Understanding of and commitment to the ideals of a Classical Christian education.
Expectation to follow course syllabus provided.

Teacher - General Job Description and Work Agreement
2006 - 2007 School Year

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP
Devotes himself to daily, personal reading and study of Gods word in prayer.
Strives to consistently exhibit love, joy, peace, and spiritual maturity in his daily work and relationships with others in the school.

INSTRUCTION (From "The 7 Laws of Teaching", by John Milton Gregory)
Knows thoroughly and familiarly the lesson to be taught; teaches from a full mind and a clear understanding. (Law #1)
Gains and keeps the attention and interest of the pupils upon the lesson. Refuses to teach without attention. (Law #2)
Uses words understood in the same sense by both teacher and pupil - language is clear and vivid to both. (Law #3)
Begins with what is already well known to the pupil in the lesson or on the subject, and proceeds to the unknown by single, easy and natural steps, letting the known explain the unknown. (Law #4
Uses the pupils own mind, exciting his self-activities. Keeps the pupils thoughts, as much as possible, ahead of the teachers expression, making him a discoverer of truth. Does not presume upon the students' understanding of new terms and concepts. (Law #5)
Requires the pupil to reproduce, in thought, the lesson he is learning - thinking it out in its parts, proofs, connections, and applications until he can express it in his own language. (Law #6)
Review, review, REVIEW - correctly reproducing the old, deepening its impression with new thought, correcting false views, and completing the true. (Law #7)
Teaches universal integration of subject matter.
Homework assignments are effective and appropriate to the lesson of the day.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Provides an orderly teaching environment by consistently enforcing his own class rules and the school's discipline policies.
Maintains a clean, attractive, well-ordered classroom. Students assist in keeping the classroom clean.
LESSON PLANNING AND GRADING
Plans lessons in order to achieve the goals of the courses 4-column plan and to fulfill the goals of classical-Christian education.
Documents lesson progress every two weeks as it relates to the objectives of the 4-column plan. Provides updated copies to the teacher administration (Headmaster, Senior Master and Teacher Mentor) upon request.
Uses a variety of assignments to measure student learning.
Keeps students, parents, and teacher administration adequately informed of deficiencies and gives sufficient notice of failure.
PROFESSIONAL
Reports to the Headmaster. Receives additional operational support and guidance from the Senior Master.
Demonstrates a biblical approach to his work by his punctuality, cheerful and compliant attitude, attention to duties, appearance, etc., and follows the guidelines as set forth in the Teacher Handbook.
Uses acceptable English in written and oral communication. Speaks with clear articulation.
Develops and maintains appropriate rapport with students and parents, and maintains close fellowship with the schola (fellow faculty members) in order to cultivate a true education.
Attends all required meetings and special events such as Delphi Meetings, Open House, etc.
