Job Description:
ABSTRACT: Each C.U.R.E. Community has an Executive Director. The primary function of the Executive Director is to oversee the securing of resources from the community. Specifically these three resources are fundraising, procurement and volunteers. The Executive Director will work closely with the C.U.R.E. Community Operations Director, and will interface with the other C.U.R.E. Communities and the PROJECT C.U.R.E. headquarters.

REPORTS TO: PROJECT C.U.R.E. Vice President for Development at International Headquarters.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: The Executive Director is primarily responsible for the development of the PROJECT C.U.R.E. Community in the three critical areas of Fundraising, Procurement and Volunteer Recruitment. In addition, the Executive Director will cooperate with the Operations Director in the management of the internal operations of processing, inventory and shipping of donated medical relief.

Fundraising: The Executive Director is responsible for raising the operating budget of the C.U.R.E. Community. The approximate budget for a C.U.R.E. Community is $1,000,000.

Procurement: The Executive Director will manage the contacts with the primary sources of supply; medical manufacturers, wholesale suppliers and end users including hospitals, hospice, home care and clinics/doctors offices.

Volunteers: The Executive Director will oversee the recruitment of individuals and groups of volunteers for the C.U.R.E. Community. This is done through various meetings with community organizations, corporations, service clubs and churches.

Operations: The Executive Director will work together with the Operations Director of the C.U.R.E. Community. The Executive Director is expected to be knowledgeable about the operations of the C.U.R.E. Community, and may be called upon to provide assistance and information to the PROJECT C.U.R.E. Vice President of Operations.

Team Building: The Executive Director must build a team of individuals to support the C.U.R.E. Community. It is anticipated that the Executive Director will work primarily with volunteers to assist in Fundraising, Procurement and Volunteer Recruitment. The Executive Director is responsible for motivating and managing these individuals to achieve the mission of "delivering health and hope to the world." In addition, the Executive Director will build and manage a C.U.R.E. Community Advisory Board to assist in securing the three key resources of funding, medical materials and volunteers.

About PROJECT C.U.R.E. Since 1987, PROJECT C.U.R.E. has been involved in touching the lives of the ill and dying around the world. It started with a single container load of medical supplies sent to a doctor in a Brazilian favilla, and has grown to include more than 100 countries on nearly every continent of the world. On average, two to three ocean going cargo containers of medical supplies and equipment leave our warehouses bound for the needy people in one of these locations each week. PROJECT C.U.R.E. focuses solely on medical relief and often partners with other organizations if food, clothes or toys are needed in the area of concern. Further, while PROJECT C.U.R.E. is committed to long-term change in the medical conditions of an area as opposed to a single shipment of medical relief for an area devastated by disaster, we have also partnered with organizations such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent in response to crises such as hurricanes, floods and wars.

PROJECT C.U.R.E. is unique in several respects. First, we will not ship relief until someone from our staff has been to the country, walked the halls of the hospitals and clinics, met with the medical staff and technicians, and secured appropriate agreement from the proper authorities. This is the only way to maintain credibility with our donor-partners. And we have gained an incredible level of expertise, having personally visited a huge percentage of the worlds most austere health care facilities.

Second, we operate on a skeleton crew. PROJECT C.U.R.E. will send over $40 million in medical relief this year. Remarkably, our full time staff is less than twenty, and each is ultimately responsible for their own income through grants, gifts or monthly support. In the Denver C.U.R.E. Community, a small army of over 5,500 volunteers works in a vast 121,000 square foot warehouse where they collect, sort, inventory and distribute the medical relief. Warehouse operations in Nashville, Los Angeles, Phoenix and London are following closely behind. Needless to say, it is a very committed group of individuals. PROJECT C.U.R.E.s vision for growth is to open 25 such collection warehouses in the United States, and several more in Western Europe.

Finally, PROJECT C.U.R.E. never charges the recipients for any of the relief shipped. Many organizations will charge the beneficiaries a percentage of the retail price for their help. We simply dont do that. Weve chosen to take the more difficult road of looking for financial partners to pay for the shipping, warehousing and administrative overhead (which currently runs at less than 2%). It makes the job harder, but its more effective.

The average value of a container of donated medical supplies is $400,000 (wholesale). The average program cost to deliver a container is $20,000. A C.U.R.E. Community is expected to provide a container per week, or a total of 50 containers in a year.

The C.U.R.E. Community Executive Director must have experience in fundraising (over $500,000) and community involvement, and must demonstrate an ability to lead in a variety of positions. The Executive Director must be a "self-starter" and motivated from internal goals, rather than external management. A significant portion of the Executive Directors time must be spent in the community, raising awareness of PROJECT C.U.R.E. and gathering volunteers and donations, both financial and medical. In addition, the Executive Director must demonstrate a capability to manage details of a large, complex operation.
