GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this position is to develop, implement and manage all budget, financial management, and day-to-day accounting operations for a religious organization with an annual budget of over $1M. This includes the supervision and training of the payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable staff. In addition, provide oversight and management of contributions processing and issuance of annual statements, bank reconciliations, coordination and preparation for audit reviews. In this role, the finance manager will act as the primary contact to internal (Executive Pastor, Human Resource Officer and Office Manager) and external customers, Pastors and Church Staff, including reporting obligations to the Executive Council.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor Degree in Finance or Accounting, or related field, plus a minimum of four (5) years of progressively responsible professional financial management experience, preferably in a non-profit or religious organization or similar environment;
Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles, methods and practices of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), with an emphasis on non-profit accounting
Thorough knowledge of federal and state accounting requirements
Ability to prepare complex accounting entries, financial reports and records
Ability to monitor and analyze complex financial systems
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to include expressing technical ideas
One (1) year of experience in a supervisory capacity.

Knowledge of non-profit or Church accounting and budgeting practices, processes and requirements.
Knowledge and ability to maintain a complex multifaceted budget including long-range revenue forecasts and economic impact.
Knowledge and ability to develop and maintain necessary processes to insure integrity of the financial and accounting function.
Knowledge and ability to use standard office computer programs with a special emphasis in spreadsheet programs. A working knowledge of Church software, a plus (Shelby).
Ability to analyze financial operations using statistical methods and report on a variety of Church and ministry operations.
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the Pastorate, co-workers, congregants, outside ministry leaders, and the Executive Council.
Ability to work independently while supervising other personnel and maintaining an efficient operation, high morale, and strong teamwork ethic.
Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing and to prepare succinct, coherent, and accurate financial reports and analyses.

Manage bank accounts and cash flow on a weekly basis.
Responsible for the monthly general ledger close, and preparation of financial reports, financial analyses, and periodic financial performance summaries.
Manage and resolve discrepancies concerning payroll, accounts receivable, and cash deposits, including providing guidance to personnel.
Training and supervision of accounting staff on accounting policies, procedures and automated systems.
Develops the Departments annual operating and capital budget and monitors encumbrances and expenditures, including current year budget revisions and future budget proposals for multiple cost centers.
Reports budgetary, financial, revenue, and all other related accounting information to the Executive Pastor and Executive Council and, when required, to the Board of Trustees.
Approves all departmental purchase orders, payrolls, contracts and accounts payable.
Assists in the year-end audit process through the preparation of audit schedules, account analyses, and answering auditor inquiries.
Implements and installs financial standard operating policies and procedures (GAAP - Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), in accordance with IRS standards for non-profit and religious organizations, for all divisions and performs related work as assigned.
Maintains and recommends enhancements to automated accounting, revenue, purchasing, project and fixed asset systems.
Prepares appropriate reports, recommendations and implementation plans. When required, implements or supervises the implementation of approved recommendations.
Performs additional financial management and other related duties as assigned that may be unique to the particular department.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, assigns, directs, supervises and evaluates the work of budget, financial management, accounting and other staff as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is essentially performed in an office setting and requires no special or unusual stringent physical demands. Position requires visual acuity for reviewing, checking, preparing and maintaining written and computer files. Incumbent is required to have sufficient hearing to accurately perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity to operate standard office, data entry, and word processing equipment is required.
