POSITION TITLE:                              Director, William Carey Academy


POSITION DESCRIPTION:                 The Director of William Carey Academy is the sole administrative official selected by the Board to carry out the mission and vision of the school. The Director is accountable for day to day operations and functioning, and for developing on-going strategy and for achieving board-set objectives. The Director hires staff and personnel within the financial budgets to meet staffing needs and requirements.

Reports to:                             School Board


Supervision given:                Teaching staff & administrative personnel



  • Five years of previous educational experience
  • Has (or is working on) a relevant Master’s Degree
  • Prior administrative experience as a school administrator or principal is preferred
  • Familiarity with ACSI accreditation is preferred



  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement healthy team dynamics
  • Ability to operate in a multicultural setting
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze a problem, strategize for change and execute an effective plan
  • Posses strong and growing knowledge of Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint)

The Director’s job description is contained fully within the Board Policy Manual (BPM), and for ease is summarized in this format. The Director has freedom to operate within his/her personal style as long as s/he stays within the guidelines specified in the Board Policy Manual. Expected contributions can be states as performance in the following areas of organizational goals and organizational operations.



Major organizational goals and monitoring indicators for the next four years are stated in the BPM. The Director is expected to:

  • Develop a strategic plan based on the policies in the BPM, update it as necessary, link major activities in the plan to the relevant sections of this BPM, and provide copies of the plan to the board (BPM 2.9)
  • Work collaboratively with the school board and specifically, the Chair, to prepare for board meetings (BPM 3.6 and 3.6.2)
  • Implement board policies and develop and implement necessary administrative policies for WCA. (BPM 4.1)
  • Communicate with the board about all appropriate matters in a timely and effective manner (BPM 4.3)
  • Work collaboratively with the Board and Chancellor to advance and represent WCA in a positive light to the external world (BPM 5.)



The Director is expected to:

  • Staff, train, motivate, lead, direct, and terminate staff except as stated in the bylaws (BPM 4.6)
  • Treat all staff (paid and volunteer), students and potential students with dignified, humane and fair practices (BPM 4.7, 5.5 and 5.6)
  • Ensure that the financial integrity of the organization is maintained at all times and Stay within board-established financial goals, parameters and priorities; (BPM 5.1)
  • Establish, maintain, and eliminate programs and services to achieve the organization’s mission and goals in the most effective and efficient manner (BPM 5.2.)


Duties and responsibilities performed within one’s capabilities that do not constitute a major change may be added, deleted, or altered at any time at the discretion of the supervisor either orally or in writing.
