General Placement Description For "Spoken English and Communication Skills Development Programme" Project, Mizoram


1. Job title: ESL & Communications Consultant.(2 Tutors, 1 Team leader)

2. Location: Aizawl, Mizoram, India.

3. Term of service will be for 1 year with effect from the commencement of service in the Project, i.e.arrival into India and completion of the Project.

4. Name of the Project: "Spoken English and Communication Skills Development Programme" - A Govt. of India Project under the North Eastern Council implemented by DevPro (DevCorps International Partner.

5. Target Beneficiaries:

No.: Approximately 150.
Level: Tertiary level Students and Unemployed Graduates.
Centres: College of Education and Aizawl Govt.College.
Preference will be given to students with low economic background and those with no previous academic exposure outside of Mizoram.

6. Objective of the Project

i) To address the compound human resource problem of unemployment, limited access to jobs, lack of confidence, personal and economic development and isolation.

Expected outcomes of the Project:

i) Improved performance academically.
ii) Ability to compete and successfully navigate their career direction.
iii) Ability to secure and perform in gainful employment and contribute to the development of the state and country.
iv) Ability to adapt to different cultures and integrate more fully in the life and society of the rest of India.

6. Detailed working job description

A. Team Leader:

JOB DESCRIPTION

1. Job Title: SEDP Team Leader
2. Responsible to: SEDP Supervisor
3. Duties:
i. To lead the SEDP Team
ii. To direct the day-to-day running of the SEDP programme
iii. To take a leading role in the SEDP Team in developing materials for the programme
iv. To teach classes and other aspects of the SEDP as detailed in the syllabus
v. To participate in the development and revision of the syllabus
vi. Ant other SEDP duties that the supervisor requires from time to time

4. Responsibilities:
i. To maintain regular contact with the SEDP Supervisor
ii. To keep an accurate account of any SEDP expenses
iii. To ensure a high standard of service is provided by the SEDP Team
iv. To ensure that the SEDP in each institution is tailored for the students in that institution
v. To maintain regular contact with the Institution Heads and faculty where the SEDP is running

B.Tutor:

Responsible to: Spoken English Development Programme(SEDP) Team Leader
1. Duties:
i. To teach classes and other aspects of the SEDP as detailed in the syllabus
ii. To participate in developing materials for the programme
iii. Any other SEDP duties that the supervisor requires from time to time

2. Responsibilities:
i. To maintain regular contact with the SEDP Team Leader
ii. To ensure a high standard of service is provided the SEDP Team
iii. To ensure that the SEDP in each institution is tailored for the students in that institution

C. Classroom Assistants:

3. Job Title: SEDP Volunteer
4. Location: Aizawl
5. Responsible to: SEDP Team Leader
6. Duties:
i. To participate in classes and other aspects of the SEDP
ii. To be involved in as many activities as possible with the SEDP students
iii. To seek to provide communicative English opportunities to the SEDP students as much as possible
iv. Any other SEDP duties that the SEDP Team Leader requires from time to time

7. Responsibilities:
i. To maintain regular contact with the SEDP Team Leader
ii. To ensure a high standard of service is provided the SEDP Team
iii. To ensure that in every way you maintain the good name of the SEDP and its providers


7. QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Team Leader: Having at least an M.A. in TESOL and five years experience, the ability to establish and lead a team and experience in course and material design. A commitment of at least 2 years to the position is required (The project is expected to be extended for a longer period based on the performance in the first year)

Teaching Staff: Having at least a graduate qualification and some experience in TESOL, ability to develop a quick rapport with students, and confidence in the classroom. A commitment of at least 1 year to the position is required.

Classroom Assistants: This role is for volunteers wishing to visit for a period of up to 14 days. They need to enjoy making conversation with Speakers of English as a Second Language.

8. QUALITIES REQUIRED

This project will be run in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, a State in the North Eastern corner of India, with a of 200,000 population in a hilly, jungle covered area of India. It is fairly remote with very few foreigners. The team members need to be self-reliant, and prepared to work closely together as a team. They must display commitment and integrity in all areas of their life. Flexibility will be required, as the program will work around existing tertiary courses.

9. FINANCES

Salary will be based on an Indian pay scale. Applicants will need to ensure that they have sufficient personal funds for insurance, international travel and any other expenses beyond a basic Indian salary.

Salary in the Project for the one year only is available. Indian pay scale salary will be consolidated Rs 14,000/-(Approx. 300 USD) per month for Tutor. Rs 18,000/- (Approx 400 USD)for Team Leader. Tax will be deducted at source. 20% and 2% educational cess as per Govt. of India norms.

An approximate 2500 - 3000 USD in a year will be made after cutting all expenses.

Housing: Housing cost will be borne by the Govt. of Mizoram.

Total: Per Annum 1500 USD

* Local Conveyance may be not needed or if at all, only abut 300 USD
per year may be needed.
* Food and housing total cost 60-80 USD per month

Travel to location: Domestic travel to location from Delhi or Kolkata will be borne by DevPro.

10. Accountability structure in Host and Employing Organization-DevPro:
The final authority in DevPro is the Board of Trustees DevPro. In DevPro, the ESL worker will report to the Executive Director. Professionally at ESL Project, worker will report to the Team Leader.

11. Hours of work:
Hours needs be flexible as the classes need to be built around existing courses, but mostly within 9:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m. with a break from 12:-1:00 p.m. (This is subject to the need of the Programme and to be decided within the Team.)

12. Leave allowances:
The Project being only for one year, leave allowances will be made for absolute need like medical. However, so long as the target is met, leave or breaks for recreation etc. can be determined by the Team leader/Supervisor and Team members in DevPro at their discretion.


16. Insurance:
Medical Insurance will be in the hands of the worker and all details should be sent to DevPro Office. Hospitals are available, both Govt. Private and Mission Hospitals.


17. Work related expenses:
DevPros "Spoken English and Communication Skills Development Programme" Project will cover any work related expenses that includes travel from Delhi to location and accommodation, work related phone calls and internet, business materials etc.

Married couple or single male preferred.

Free housing provided. One year employment visa avialable.
