Covenant Church of Harrisburg

1. Description

The Pastor is selected for an unspecified period of service. He will maintain the proper emphasis upon outreach and discipleship within the ministry of the entire Covenant Church body (congregation and staff) and community. He will work with Elders and Deacons (and other staff) to implement the vision of Covenant Church through biblical principals as specified in our Constitution. He is expected to contribute to the spiritual growth of the Church body through fellowship, encouragement, cooperation, prayer, support and other appropriate ways, as he serves His Lord Jesus Christ and the Church.

2. Qualifications

a. Must display a clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and exhibit a passion for God and a Christ-Like spirit. These qualities will be evidenced in his personal life, his family relationships and his ministry. He nurtures his inner self through a disciplined life of daily fellowship with God in prayer and bible study.
b. Must exhibit consistent biblical, spiritual and moral character and lifestyle, complying with the by-laws and constitution of the church and as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4 and Acts 4.
c. Must be in full agreement with the doctrinal statement of the Covenant Church of Harrisburg.
d. Must possess solid time management skills and organizational abilities. The ability to coordinate several activities at once to quickly analyze and resolve specific problems is vital.
e. Must have the potential and desire to remain in long-term ministry at Covenant Church.
f. Must have developed and competent scriptural knowledge to effectively teach and preach biblical truths.
g. Must have successful ministry experience.
h. Must exhibit adequate skills and education to evangelize, disciple, counsel and work with believers of all ages, diverse ethnic backgrounds and levels of biblical literacy to accomplish church and personal goals
i. Must be properly ordained.
j. Preferred to have 4-year degree from an accredited college or university.
k. Must have the capacity to envision the future and its possibilities and possess the leadership skills necessary to lead staff, the Session and the church at large
l. Must be flexible, friendly, approachable and honest. He must deal with conflict directly, openly, honestly and graciously.
m. He is a "team player" who knows how to surround himself with strong biblical leaders whose gifts augment his own and he allows them the freedom to exercise their gifts.
n. Must have biblical counseling education and skills.

3. Responsibilities

a. Worship
i. Must partner with worship committee to develop meaningful worship services
ii. Must preach the Word of God regularly
iii. Must administer the ordinances as noted in the church By-laws and Constitution
b. Leadership
i. Must partner with the Session in exercising spiritual oversight
ii. Must work with the leadership to organize and develop the possibilities for service available in the church
iii. Creates goal ownership and a sense of share purpose among the laity through leading by example, involving others in the decision-making process and actively participating in meetings and events
c. Serves as a part of various committees as determined by the Session.
d. Training: Ensure the discipleship and training of current and future Session servant leaders.
e. Visitation
i. Visits people in the midst of crisis (i.e. death, sickness, trauma or other significant events) where pastoral care is required, demonstrating warmth, openness, spiritual encouragement and sensitivity to the needs of those involved.
ii. Develops a "Visitation Ministry" through recruitment and training
iii. Involves deacons/elders or other lay people in visitation for ongoing training
f. Counseling: Counsels those in spiritual need and comforts bereaved, assisting persons facing problems and decisions

4. Accountability
a. The Senior Pastor will be committed to personal regular accountability to the Session, Covenant Church membership and with other believers outside this church. He should have demonstrated a pattern of maintaining such relationships.
b. This position will be evaluated annually by the Session.
c. All vacation time and time away from his Church responsibilities will be planned in advance annually with the Session (or Administrative Committee) to ensure all areas are covered during the Senior Pastor's absence.

5. Compensation
a. Raises and/or bonuses will be determined by the Session based on a combination of performance evaluation based on the Senior Pastor Job Description and financial capability of the Church.
b. Vacation periods, sick leave, insurance coverage and other benefits are determined by the Session.

Covenant Church of Harrisburg is searching for a full-time Pastor:

The man that God calls as our Pastor will be the spiritual leader for our congregation.
He will have a relationship with God based on salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.
He believes the Bible to be the true and inerrant Word of God.
He must be firmly grounded in the Word, vigilant in prayer, have a heart for the lost, and a desire for the edification of the saints.
The candidate must demonstrate consistent excellence in presenting Gods word from the pulpit in a manner that captivates and engages, with clear and accurate teaching as well as demonstrating the relevance and applicability of the Word of God in his messages.
He must have a proven track record as a gifted communicator with a passion for spiritual formation, a desire to lead the church, preach the Word of God, motivate and mentor other pastoral staff and the Session.
He will subscribe to the Covenant Church of Harrisburgs Constitution and By Laws.
He will share co-accountability with the Session for achieving the spiritual growth of the body based on foundational Biblical values and the strategic objectives of the church.
He will provide oversight to the process of leadership development and proactively shepherd ministry leaders, elders, and staff.
He will be the chief communicator, representative, and leader of the churchs outreach into our community.
He will be involved in coordinating various other pastoral ministries such as annual planning, outreach, evangelism, Christian education, fellowship, pastoral care/counseling, funerals, weddings, and baptisms.

The man selected as Pastor of our church should also have the following characteristics:

Fulfills the Biblical qualifications for church leadership (I Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9).
Has genuine warmth so that people enjoy being around him and find him as approachable.
Has a high level of energy, yet balances work hours with the time he needs for his own walk with God, appropriate time for family, and personal time for refreshment and diversion.
Has a heart for evangelism and missions in our city, region and the world.
Is open to change, wants the church to grow spiritually and improve.

Covenant Church of Harrisburg (established in 1977 as an independent organization with no denominational ties) is located about 15 miles north of Charlotte, NC. We have a congregational government with a solitary Pastor and a 12-member Session. We are a congregation of 100 - 200 members with a typical Sunday morning attendance of 75 - 100. Our worship is primarily a blended style. It is Covenants mission statement "To know Jesus, to make Him known and to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit."
SALARY: $36K - $46K
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Secular: 4-year degree
Religious: Seminary degree
PROFESSIONAL MINISTRY EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 1 to 5 years experience as an associate pastor, youth pastor, or senior pastor of a local church.
