Mission Statement
Developing Christian young people who are spiritually and academically prepared to advance God's Kingdom.

Harbor Light Christian School is looking for a spiritually mature individual who demonstrates a balance between people skills and organizational and structural skills. This individual needs to be one who relies on prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit and is able to work under the authority of Harbor Light Community Chapels Elders/Pastor, and the HLCS school board. We believe the HLCS board, Harbor Light Community Chapel, HLCS staff and families area team, and therefore, require a team player as a leader.


Develop and maintain a school, which is educationally excellent and thoroughly Christian.
Seek the Lord daily for understanding of the schools problems and opportunities and for the guidance and help in solving and seizing them.
Articulate the Christian and educational vision which the Board formulates for the school, and strive to bring together the schools mission, services, and constituencies.
Provide educational leadership to the faculty and Board.
Attend all meetings of the Board and keep it fully informed concerning the schools total operation.
Serve as ex-officio member of all standing committees as directed by the Board.
Participate in the review of policies and formation of new policies and communicate them to parents, teachers, and students.


Help the Guidance Counselor implement and administer the educational program.
Maintain and encourage a learning environment that fosters growth, innovation, and creativity by the teaching staff.
Work with the Guidance Counselor to coordinate the evaluation of students and the reporting of student progress to parents.
Coordinate wit the Guidance Counselor the identification of children with special needs and lead the development of their academic and social programs.
Assist the staff with management and discipline problems to achieve and excellent learning environment.
Work with the Education Committee and Teachers to determine educational resources to provide support required for effective teaching.
Evaluate classroom instruction and staff to insure that a Christian philosophy is being fully integrated in the instructional program.
Maintain student contact by teaching some subject at some level on a regular basis.


Supervise the daily operation of the school.
Develop with the Finance Committee an annual budget and be responsible for the administration of the schools budget.
Direct the admission process with the Guidance Counselor.
Supervise and coordinate the activities and programs of all the extracurricular activities of the school with the input form the Athletic Director and Harbor Light Community Chapel.
Supervise the record keeping system for the school with the Administrative Assistant.
Develop the Board agenda each month with the Board President.


Supervise all staff members - professional and nonprofessional.
Evaluate all staff members on a regular basis and keep the evaluations in an appropriate employee file.
Lead and assist the Board in the process of hiring all personnel.
Demonstrate a sensitivity and concern for each staff member and be accessible for interaction with staff members.
Determine staffing needs.
Assist the Administrative Assistant in compiling a substitute teacher list.
Direct with the assistance of the Guidance Counselor an orientation program and an in-service program for all teaching and non-teaching staff.

Public Relations

Keep the Staff, parents, students and Harbor Light Community Chapel informed regarding board work and policies.
Provide for the flow of information about the school about the school to parents, alumni, churches and community.
Foster a positive relationship between the school and its support organizations such as ACSI and the Development Director.
Seek with the Publicity and Fundraising Committee to stimulate an interest for Christian education the northern Michigan area.
Meet weekly with the Harbor Light Chapel pastor and attend weekly ministry staff meetings.

Facilities Management

Notify Harbor Light Community Chapel when building maintenance is needed.
Supervise the custodial care of the buildings and equipment.
Work with Harbor Light Community Chapel to determine priorities in building improvements and maintenance.


Perform and other duties assigned by Harbor Light Community Chapel Elders/ Pastor and HLCS School Board.

In summary, HLCS is looking for an individual who has a close daily walk with Jesus and a strong Biblical World View. The administrator must be in agreement with the doctrinal statement of Harbor Light Community Chapel and Harbor Light Christian School. Church membership at Harbor Light Community Chapel is preferred.

Educational requirement of a Bachelors degree in education from a Christian college or its equivalent, a Masters degree and at least two years experience at a Christian school or ministry are preferred. The administrator must have an understanding of current educational trends and be able to articulate clearly the goals, philosophy, and vision of HLCS to the parents, students, and the Christian Community at large.
