This position is responsible to lead students while teaching outdoor leadership programs, administration of outdoor leadership activities, and for teaching classes assigned by the Dean. This will include several of the required outdoor leadership courses along with elective field experience courses and courses assigned to assist with delivering a positive learning experience within the School of Business and Leadership (SBL). This includes the ability to teach business or other courses assigned to meet the mission of the School of Business and Leadership, and the Outdoor Leadership Program (OLP). Specific courses will be assigned on the qualifications and the ongoing growth and direction of both programs – the Outdoor Leadership Program and the School of Business and Leadership. The individual chosen will provide and demonstrate excellent hands-on teaching skills. They must be able to build positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff, and accomplish goals set by the Dean of the School of Business and Leadership.
Duties and Responsibilities
- In addition to administrative duties, teach a part-time load in OLP courses that the finalist is qualified (and perhaps certified) to teach. Teaching load and specific courses will be determined by the OLP Director and the Dean.
- Provide the Dean with the proposed OLP budget during the University budget cycle each year and maintain the monthly and yearly OLP budget.
- Hire, manage courses, and supervise OLP affiliate (adjunct) professors. This includes identifying and recruiting candidates, coordinating these efforts with the University human resources department, training of new affiliates in SBL and OLP policies, procedures, and ethos, providing administrative support as needed (e.g., permits, transportation, gear, food, etc.), and periodically evaluating teaching effectiveness in the classroom and the field.
- Provides the Dean with a draft OLP course schedule for each semester, including dates for all classroom and field sessions, instructors, and appropriate required course fees.
- Ensures safety and risk management planning and execution for all field experience courses and trips for students or others as assigned. This includes equipment procurement, maintenance and repair.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of all OLP equipment and supplies and maintain the OLP equipment storage facility.
- Obtain and oversee compliance for all local, state, and federal permitting for all field experiences.
- Plan and coordinate transportation for all field experiences students will participate in. Includes the planning and executing the supply of safe food and beverage for field experiences.
- Oversee and design all OLP curriculum for both the program at large and individual courses.
- Market the OLP to prospective and current students. Oversee the design of collateral materials such as brochures, online videos and maintain the OLP Facebook pages and coordinate with or support CCU admissions, marketing, and communications staff as applicable and appropriate.
- Network with a wide array of outdoor professionals, the outdoor industry, and outdoor ministries both within the local and regional community and beyond.
- Responsible for all duties and requirements appropriate to their academic rank as described in the CCU Faculty Handbook or as assigned by the Dean or VP of Academic Affairs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of experiential education and outdoor leadership pedagogy, with the integration of Christian truth and perspectives.
- M.S. or M.A from an accredited school of higher education.
- Previous successful higher education teaching experience or relevant work experience that includes a minimum of three years of experience in outdoor industry, outdoor education, or outdoor ministry organizations.
- Thorough understanding of risk management in outdoor programming.
- Demonstrated extensive expertise in backcountry and mountain skills. This includes: experience and substantive expertise leading others in at least three of the following: backpacking, hiking 14ers, rock climbing, snow climbing, mountaineering, snow shelters and winter camping, canoeing, whitewater rafting, challenge course facilitation, natural resource/ecological interpretation, fly fishing, or overseas trekking.
- Current certification as a Wilderness First Responder (or higher level certification).
- While the following certifications are not required, one or more are preferable:
- Leave No Trace Master Educator.
- Avalanche Level II.
- American Avalanche Association Avalanche Pro or American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education Level 1 Instructor.
- American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor or Professional Climbing Instructor Association Single Pitch Instructor.
- State of Colorado Raft Guide Instructor.
- American Canoe Association Level 1 Instructor.
- Association for Challenge Course Technology Level 1 Facilitator.
- Wilderness Education Association Outdoor Leader or Outdoor Educator.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license - Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
Nature of Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, you may be required to walk; stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; speak with clarity, have appropriate vision and hearing capabilities. The employee must exert medium to heavy physical effort, lifting and/or moving 50+ pounds. This position involves irregular hours, including nights, weekends, summers, and other traditional faculty holidays. Local and regional travel is expected. Tasks may involve extended periods of time in the office or in the outdoors conducting wilderness experiences.
