Job Description:
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Outreach Worker has the following specific duties and responsibilities

RESPONSIBLE TO: The Executive Director

Interview applicants for the Bethany House shelter and assist in the formulation and implementation of their individual plans of action, setting out goals with clients.

Determine, along with other staff persons, psychologists, doctors, lawyers, and others, how best to meet the clients' needs, and follow up on their progress.

Assist clients in getting through the procedures that surround many benefits

to which they may be entitled, such as unemployment benefits, grants for job

training and other entitlement.

Provide transportation through volunteers or staff to accompany clients and children when necessary to medical and legal appointments and job interviews when they may experience unusual difficulties.

Accompany clients to court appearances and to the magistrates' office when support and assistance is needed. Train volunteers to assist in this support service.

Assist clients in establishing or re-establishing relationships with family, friends, and the congregation of their choice, to prevent isolation once they leave the shelter.

Develop resource information on employment opportunities, medical and legal service, counseling, childcare, and housing opportunities.

Make arrangements for the pick-up and delivery of furniture and household items for clients, to be picked up from the thrift shop when clients are ready

to leave the shelter.

Plan and coordinate activities in connection with clients, i.e. house meetings, transportation, outings, dinners, and picnics. Make arrangements to get clothing from BHNV thrift shop, etc.

Make home visits to clients and assist with the two-year follow-up program.


General Reports are as follows:

In conjunction with other staff, prepare a written report;

MONTHLY: BHNV statistics, Fairfax County Monthly Report and Board of Directors Meetings. Number of persons in shelters and in two year follow up program.

QUARTERLY: Fairfax County Report. Written report to BHNV Board of Directors

ANNUALLY: BHNVS Statistical report for annual meeting. Year-end grant reports.

Prepare a written summary and statistical reports, on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

Attend spousal abuse prevention and treatment classes, seminars and workshops and other scheduled events.

Assist with speaking engagements and other community outreach programs.
