The Bolivian Street Children Project (BSCP, www.bolivianstreetchildren.org) is a Christian social welfare organization that addresses the unique needs of street children in Bolivia and around the world. We work to uncover the potential of these children and to make a lasting difference in their lives, one small child at a time. The organization is seeking to hire a Site Director for Fundacion Bernabe based in La Paz, Bolivia.
The current operation within La Paz contains ~12 local staff caring for 20 children in 3 residential homes (capacity for 30 children). The current plan for facilities targets 7-8 homes in total with a stand alone school facility.
The Site Director is responsible for managing the program execution within La Paz, Bolivia, which currently consists of the street ministry, residential homes, and school. The Site Director is expected to maintain the highest possible standard of integrity, character and transparency consistent with the Christian faith, Christian morals and Christian ethics. He or she is expected to properly represent the mission of the organization and is responsible for the organization's consistent and continued achievement of its purpose and vision. The Site Director for Fundacion Bernabe will report directly to the Executive Director of BSCP, who resides in Boston, MA.
The Site Director is responsible for all program execution leadership and management activities within La Paz, Bolivia. In general, the role has five core areas of responsibility: leadership & organizational development, management & operations, financial oversight, program development, and communications.
Leadership & Organizational Development
Build a strong and cohesive organization to both effectively and efficiently care for the needs of street children in La Paz.
Grow the program to operate at or near the BSCP bed capacity for number of children in the homes
Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services in accordance with the priorities and plans of the Executive Director and BSCP board.
Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
Build, foster, and maintain sound working relationships with Bolivian organizations, community groups, and surrounding neighborhoods (churches, other social service organizations, government agencies, hospitals, etc...).
Produce effective public relations documentation to raise awareness about street children and to create new fundraising opportunities within Bolivia proper.
Prepare, review, recommend, and implement appropriate organizational policies (to be vetted with Executive Director and the BSCP board as appropriate).
Management & Operations
Work effectively and collaboratively with both the Executive Director of BSCP and the staff at Fundacion Bernabe in ensuring that the program and vision are properly carried out.
Oversee and monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve the quality of care for the children
o Run standing meetings with the staff in Bolivia to keep them informed and in tune with the direction of the program
o Ensure human resources issues of the staff are addressed in a timely and professional manner.
o Mentor and develop staff to enable continued growth of the individual and the organization
Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization, and assist program staff to relate their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
Build respectful and supportive relationships with both the children and the other key team members (resource director, accountant, volunteer directors, social worker, psychologist, educators, teachers, and other staff).
Ensure that job descriptions are developed, regular performance evaluations are completed and delivered, and that sound human resource practices are in place and followed.
Encourage and assure the professional development of staff and volunteers
Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices (with the accountant)
Work with the staff at Fundacion Bernabe and the Executive Director of BSCP to prepare an annual budget for BSCP board approval, and see that the organization operates within said budget
Ensure that adequate cash funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its daily programs and services.
Recommend and oversee/support the development and integration of new programs as deemed necessary by the Executive Director of BSCP.
Maintain consistent formal updates and informal communications with the Executive Director of BSCP.
Travel to the United States at least once a year to meet with the BSCP board
See that the Executive Director of BSCP is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
Assure full communication of emergencies and/or changes in normal operations to the Executive Director of BSCP.
Demonstrated profession of Christian faith, demonstrated love for disadvantaged youth, and demonstrated organizational leadership and management (4 years minimum in leadership position) with available references supporting candidates success in each area.
The prospective candidate is expected to be fluent in both Spanish and English.
