Summary: The Executive Director, Development is responsible for the development and successful implementation of Children's Hunger Fund's strategic and tactical development plan, as approved by the Executive Team, with a view to systemically and effectively strengthen the organization's overall fundraising capacity while meeting annual objectives. This includes but is not limited to: nurturing current development relationships, both individual and corporate; forging new relationships to build CHF's visibility, impact, and financial resources; developing key external alliances; mentoring development team members.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. In consultation with the VP and Executive Team, develop and successfully implement a comprehensive development strategy to include financial contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations, etc., that meets or exceeds CHF's annual objectives.
  2. Support and partner with the Executive Team and board members on all major fundraising initiatives and events, as well as the Directors for Special Events, Creative, and Marketing/Public Relations.
  3. Oversee the selection and timely, professional submission of all grant requests, including development of program proposals to fund existing program and operational expenses as well as expansion opportunities; ensure proposals are written and archived with a long-term relationship-management approach.
  4. Ensure timely research and monthly reporting to the Executive Team of funding sources and trends, with foresight, to position CHF ahead of major funding changes or trends.
  5. Develop and implement a planned giving program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
  6. Oversee and ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and timely availability of all donor information.
  7. Monitor, analyze, and present monthly reports to the Executive Team on the progress of all the facets of the development program; prepare and present other reports as requested by the VP or President.
  8. Oversee, coordinate, and participate in CHF's Major Gift Officer Program, furthuring relationship development with a designated section of high-end donors, including but not limited to: update records with current information from meetings or contacts, coaching of other Major Gift Officers on best practices and success stories.
  9. Develop, implement, monitor, and assess capital campaigns for major projects as approved by the Executive Team such as building purchase, etc.
  10. Actively participate in all required CHF meetings and events, including leading departmental and direct report meetings, such as Executive Team, Leadership Team, Development Team, Staff Meeting, Toy Wraps, volunteer workdays, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Lead by example, including but not limited to: demonstrate CHF's mission, distinctives, values and statement of faith in execution of responsibilities, actively participate in required meetings/events, comply with and positively promote CHF policies and procedures.
  2. Recruit and manage team members to support the development and execution of the marketing strategy.
  3. Promote the organizational culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  4. Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative (coaching) approach on a consistent basis; develop unity and spiritual depth of team members and coach direct reports in doing the same.
  5. Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.
  6. Develop and oversee department budget, as approved by the Executive Team.

Equipment Used in Executive Director Role: - Standard Office Equipment (telephone, computer workstation, printer, copier, scanner, calculator)

 

Work Environment: - Primarily: office, churches, business offices, public venues - Occassionally: warehouse

 

Physical Demands:

  1. Constantly think and exchange accurate information verbally and in writing, such as telephone or email
  2. During a special event: constantly and alternately stand, walk, bend, lift, sit, for up to 12 hours/day
  3. Frequently operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (taking periodic stretch breaks)
  4. Frequently move around inside the office to attend meetings, obtain supplies, and operate office machinery such as printer/copier/fax machine
  5. Frequently remain in a stationary position, whether sitting or standing, approximately 50% of the time
  6. Frequently travel by air/car, including driving as required
  7. Occassionally set up and break down a display booth
  8. Occassionally lift up to 25 lbs

Minimum Qualifications (Education/Certifications/Licenses, Experience, Skills):

  1. Confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior; active member of a local church; demonstrates ongoing growth in Christian maturity
  2. Master's degree in business or equivalent knowledge and experience
  3. 10 years of related professional experience with demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources), including five years of management experience
  4. Demonstrated successful experience and leadership in developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive development program that expands and cultivates new and existing donor relationships over time, with a proven track record of translating strategic initiatives into effective tactical plans and output
  5. Professional stature, integrity, and a demonstrated servant's heart with humble confidence in the Lord, that establishes credibility and inspires the respect of others
  6. Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels of seniority, within and outside CHF
  7. Insightful with ability to ask probing questions that draw out details such as to assist in prioritizing and decision-making
  8. Ability to gather, analyze, and present data in understandable and professional format
  9. Proven decision-making, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills; ability to independently construct, communicate, and implement effective solutions (whether people-, task-, or program-related) in a changing environment while appropriately addressing immediate and future needs and impact, with discernment to appropriately judge when to obtain additional counsel and/or input
  10. Strong organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and reliable follow-through, with the ability to successfully manage multiple simultaneous projects and tasks
  11. Coaching management style; ability to appropriately influence, engage, and mentor department team members
  12. Superior customer focus with the ability to lead by example and develop others in their customer focus
  13. High energy and passion for CHF's mission; ability to clearly and convincingly present CHF's mission and ministry
  14. Ability to work independently without close oversight and as a team member who productively engages others
  15. Flexible, adaptable, and resourceful, with a proactive approach to all responsibilities
  16. Competent computer user (MS Office, Internet); able to quickly learn new software applications; familiar with donor relationship management software (Raiser's Edge preferred)
  17. Fluency in Spanish (written/spoken) is a plus
