Congregational Profile

Westminster Church of Christ is a church family of 120 that began in 1977 and moved in 2002 into a long-awaited new facility on five acres on the highway between Westminster, Maryland and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The church is led by two elders, Mike Justice and Curtis Wasmer and by minister Gary Pearson. About half of the membership has a background in Churches of Christ and Christian Churches with the other half having backgrounds in a wide variety of Christian traditions.

The church has long had a strong commitment to Christian unity and decided in 1985 to be formally identified with both a capella Churches of Christ and instrumental Christian Churches. The church and its leaders have most recently been intensely considering how to best work with God in order to see more numerical and spiritual growth. With a current membership of 120, our elders have set a bold vision for our congregation to grow to a membership of 200 by 2010.

Community Profile

Westminster is the county seat of Carroll County, Maryland, a growing county of 163,000 people in the Baltimore region. 62% of the county's workers commute to jobs outside the county making Carroll a bedroom county to Baltimore and the Washington region. Only about 20,000 people live inside the city limits of Westminster but it is the commercial center for another 75,000 people.

Westminster was founded in 1764 while Maryland was still a British colony. The town values highly its history especially from the Civil War when a skirmish fought in the middle of town delayed Confederate Jeb Stuart and his cavalry from reaching Gettysburg on time and possibly determined the outcome of the battle and, some even think, perhaps of the Civil War itself.

Many families proudly trace their ancestry in the county back many generations but they are now vastly outnumbered by the tens of thousands of newcomers over the last two generations who have transformed a rural county into an increasingly suburban one.
This transformation has caused Carroll to become more affluent. It is now among the 100 wealthiest counties in the country. The population is over 93% white but there is a small but growing Hispanic presence especially in Westminster.
