Youth Outreach Worker
Manitou Park Presbyterian Church-Tacoma WA
Tacoma, Washington, United States
Date Posted: 08/01/2008
Job Type: Full-Time
Share the good news of Gods love with the youth of Gray Middle School in South Tacoma by building relationships through tutoring, recreation and gatherings.
1.Build relationships with the youth. As Gods primary means of communicating love is through a relationship with Jesus, so too are you called to share Gods love by building relationships with the middle school aged youth of this neighborhood.
a.Through tutoring in the school. (12 hrs/wk) As God dwelt among us, so too are you called to dwell among the youth. Just 3 blocks from our church a brand new Gray Middle School is being constructed. One of your tasks will be to find a way to serve the students during the school day.
b.Through recreation after school. (6 hrs/wk) Tacoma Metro Parks runs an excellent after school program called SPARX. It provides a wonderful opportunity to play, laugh and mentor kids from the school.
c.Through gatherings at the church. (8 hrs/wk) As you get to know a core group of youth, we hope and pray that the time will emerge to provide opportunities for some of these youth to gather for times to explore the meaning of a relationship with God through Jesus.
2.Build relationships with the church. (3 hrs/wk) Manitou Park Presbyterian Church began as a place where kids in the community came to know the story of Gods love. This church has a hunger to continue that calling, yet it needs encouragement and ways to live into this calling. The YOW will spend regular time in worship and other events discerning opportunities to connect youth in the community with people in the congregation.
3.Build bridges between the church and community. (5 hrs/wk) As a City as Parish intern, you will have the freedom to explore and investigate areas in our parish where God might already be at work. As you encounter these places we hope the YOW will begin to involve our congregation with Gods work. Some possibilities for exploration include the Neighborhood Council, South Tacoma Network for Youth, community websites, etc.
4.Build relationships with the next generation. (2 hrs/wk) Manitou currently has its own tutoring program for elementary aged kids. This program provides an excellent opportunity to teach and get to know students just a year or two away from middle school.
5.Build a relationship with the pastor. (2 hrs/wk) The YOW will meet regularly with the pastor for supervision, encouragement, collaboration and prayer.
6.Build relationships and learn from other youth workers in Tacoma. (7 hrs/wk) As part of the City as Parish project, you will be involved in regular training, support and encouragement with twenty other interns. This training is one of the great assets of this program as you will be involved in weekly training led by local, long-term urban ministers. One particular highlight of the training is a week long cross-cultural trip led by Northwest Leadership Foundation.
Compensation: Monthly Stipend of $1100. Housing will be provided.
The position begins September 1, 2008 and concludes June 10, 2009
