SUM Bible College and Theological Seminary (SUM) equips indigenous leaders from America and the nations of the world by offering an affordable theological education combining academic instruction with practical hands-on ministry and personal mentorship. The Dean of Student Life’s primary responsibilities are to pursue Spiritual Formation for the student body and to focus on retention of Kingdom workers. This involves developing a comprehensive plan to meet the spiritual needs of a diverse student body. This individual has overall responsibility for chapels, discipleship groups, career counseling and special events that affect the student body’s spiritual, physical and emotional health.


Reports to:  Vice-President of Operations

Time Requirement: Full-time salaried position

Location: Must live locally near Oakland, CA, United States

  • Campus pastor: provide guidance and counseling service to the students
    • Counsel student with personal problems
    • Check on student when enduring family crisis
    • Check on student when ill/hospital visits
    • Counsel student towards future plans

  • New student orientation - coordinate with admissions
    • New arrivals
    • Arrival committees to help students move into their new environment
    • Pair upper class student to each new student for the first trimester

      • Introduce Student Government Association, Resident Assistants, and Assistant to the Resident Assistant
      • Student Agreement and Emergency Information forms
  • Student Registration
    • Register students
    • Approve classes
  • SOA (Servant of all student) evaluation Committee
    • Maintain records
    • Meet with student
    • Keep student accountable
  • Behavioral Accountability Group (BAC)
    • Address disciplinary Issues
    • Discuss consequences
    • Discuss behavioral issues with BAC and Executive Committee
  • Customary functions

      • Schedule speakers

    • Mentoring Program
      • Enlist mentors that are not administrator when possible
      • Assign each student to a mentor
      • Give guidelines (expectation) to mentors
      • Meet with mentees and mentor to assess program
      • Monitor program, revise as needed

      • Thanksgiving Dinner

    • SGA (Student Government Association)
      • Supervise and Train
      • Weekly meetings
      • Facilitate activities and events for the year
      • Facilitate voting for SGA candidates
      • Plan and execute activities: social and spiritual
      • Communicate plans and idea to and from the students and staff
  • RAs (Resident Assistants)
    • Training and supporting RAs and ARAs (Assistant Resident Assistants)
    • Weekly RA Meeting
    • Serve as consultant for room assignments
    • Help plan activities that will enhance dorm/campus life
    • Facilitate Dorm Checks
    • Along with the RAs schedule dorm devotions
    • Administer Fines
  • Provide Business Office with list of all fines
  • Medical/Health Care
    • Provide health information
    • Maintain emergency medical supplies
    • Student emergency information
    • Assist residents in securing medical services when needed
  • Safety and Security
    • Act as a liaison between Executive Committee and residents
  • Inform Behavioral Accountability Committee of concerns for student’s social and spiritual wellbeing during the trimester
  • Represent the college – recruitment
  • Teach classes from time to time as assigned
  • Experience in retention and student life services
  • Exceptional public speaking skills and oral communication skills
  • Possess strong organizational, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills
  • Work well as a team player
  • Able to model and communicate an authentic, growing relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Demonstrate confidence and knowledge among various ethnic communities  and local churches
  • Minimum of a Master's degree., preferably in counseling
  • Preferably fluent in both English and Spanish
