The Managing Director of Communications is responsible for significantly increasing Liberty Institute’s national media profile in markets throughout the United States and expanding public awareness of Liberty Institute’s mission, legal matters and educational projects. The Managing Director of Communications will develop, coordinate and direct all communication efforts associated with Liberty Institute’s mission, attorneys, legal matters and educational projects. 



  • Oversees the organization's media relations efforts, with a strong emphasis on developing and maintaining relationships with media representatives
  • Coordinates Media Releases, Press Conferences, Media Interviews, and Speaking Engagements
  • Possesses a fundamental knowledge of Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube (and other social media outlets) as they apply to a business environment and understands how to build an engaged following
  • Serves as a go-to contact for all Liberty Institute media and communications
  • Maintains a database of media and public relations contacts
  • Works closely with the Senior Management Team to build and execute external communications plans, aligning with the organization’s mission, as well as internal communication efforts to ensure message and brand consistency
  • Seeks creative opportunities to highlight Liberty Institute’s work and cases
  • Projects a consistent, positive image to the media and public
  • Conducts legal briefings with news organizations, editorial boards and key public influencers
  • Works in collaboration with Liberty Institute's attorneys and senior leadership in performing job responsibilities
  • Coordinates with Liberty Institute’s Development and Marketing Team to ensure message and brand consistency
  • Works closely with Liberty Institute Attorneys to write and prepare media releases
  • Develops messaging and communicates legal matters, projects and campaigns to media markets and the public at large
  • Develops ideas and opportunities for feature articles, interviews, presentations and other media relations activities to promote awareness of Liberty Institute, its cases and educational projects
  • Keeps Liberty Institute staff, including Development and Marketing Team, apprised of Legal Team activities, legal matters and projects
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel, Internet Explorer, PowerPoint and other graphics and/or presentation software
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Marketing and/or Business Administration
  • Juris Doctorate Degree desirable, but not mandatory
  • 7+ years of experience in a public relations field, with a proven track record in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent understanding of the news cycle required, intimately familiar with a wide range of media outlets and individuals
  • Knowledge of new media
  • Experience working with attorneys desirable, but not mandatory
  • Mature Christian believer, who demonstrates Godly principles in all aspects of life
  • Views communications/media relations role with a ministry passion and is able to articulate the mission and vision of Liberty Institute
  • Excellent understanding of basic constitutional law and legal terminology
  • Ability to clearly and quickly communicate the potential impact of complex legal matters and judicial rulings to the media, Liberty Institute supporters, and the public at large
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills- specifically including expertise in AP style
  • Displays superior interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Ability to engage and serve a variety of media outlets; Works well dealing with all personality types
  • Ability to proactively identify communications opportunities and develop supporting programs
  • Develops key relationships with the media
  • Coordinates and directs all processes involved in a successful public relations campaign
  • Self-motivated and takes initiative
  • Demonstrates creativity in positioning the organization to the media/public outlets
  • Strategic thinker who excels at coming up with original ideas and is able to execute those ideas
  • Strong negotiating skills and capable problem solver
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines and meet the mental and physical demands of frequent and unexpected events occurring in legal cases, projects and campaigns
  • Ability to handle security-sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to assist in the set up of equipment for media events
  • Ability to travel on short notice as needed for cases and projects
