The Gathering was a movement begun by Dr. John Tolson in 1978. Alarmed by the lack of spiritual direction men were providing for their families and the low number of men attending church, John developed an appealing and effective way to reach men for Christ by mobilizing Christian men to invite their friends to a non-threatening outreach event in a secular setting. Men were recruited and trained to be table hosts for the Outreach Breakfasts, where a dynamic, nationally known speaker would present a winsome message with an evangelistic thrust. Typically 500 to 2,000 men would attend, including business, professional, and government leaders in the community.

The organization was officially formed in 1987 in Orlando, when Larry Kreider came on board as the President. Laymen from a number of cities were trained to setup and run a Gathering of Men in their own city. The Gathering has worked closely with local churches and encouraged men to get involved in the church of their choice. Bible studies, luncheons, small groups, seminars, books, missions trips, and even a movie, Children in Rage, Fathers of Hope, were developed to help men grow further in their Christian walk. The Gathering, partnering with Promise Keeper, developed an accredited seminary level program to train pastors and others on ‘How to Develop a Men's Ministry in the Church.’ As the new century began, The Gathering started a ‘Gathering of Women’ ministry. Furthermore, a discipleship program, ‘The Four Priorities,’ was launched in 2003 and now a workbook by the same title is available for small groups.

Currently, The Gathering has active ministries in 9 cities (including Orlando, Houston, Boca Raton, San Antonio, Springfield, OH and West Palm Beach) with one more city set to come online in the next six months. The Gathering has a vision and a strategic plan to expand to 50 cities by 2020. After 27 years of faithful service, Larry Kreider is stepping down and The Gathering is seeking a dynamic and innovative new President/CEO to follow him in a seamless transition.

The President/CEO (in partnership with the Board of Directory) will clearly communicate and implement the strategy and growth for The Gathering USA. This position will involve the execution and continual development of the strategic plan to advance the company’s mission, objectives, revenues, effectiveness, growth, and maturity as an organization. The primary responsibilities of the President/CEO will include the execution and improvement of the existing strategy for the expansion of new Gathering chapters as well as a national training program. They will also be responsible for the national budget, financial management of the budget, and for all fund raising initiatives to support both existing programs and expansion plans.

The successful candidate is expected to have a proven track record of success in ministry, business, and/or management in a non-profit organization. While education is not the primary consideration in the selection of a new President/CEO, the successful candidate will have earned, at minimum, a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university. A Master’s Degree in theology or business is preferred, but not required. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a passion for lifelong learning along with personal and professional development.

The Gathering USA national office is located in downtown Orlando, Florida. Although it's a city well known for being the home of the "Happiest place on earth," Orlando has much more to offer than Disney World and other local theme parks. The cost of living in Orlando is well below the national average, and Florida is one of the few states in the country that does not have a State Income Tax. The area boasts outstanding schools, some of the best golf courses in the world (playable year round), and an abundance of outdoor activities. From art and history museums, to the philharmonic, ballets, and theater companies, Orlando has enough to keep your social life buzzing. You can enjoy the Winter Park Playhouse and the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, and you'll also be in close proximity to the Kennedy Space Center. Many local festivals are held throughout the year, including the Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival and the Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays. Orlando is home to the Orlando Magic NBA team, Orlando City USL soccer team, and Orlando Solar Bears ECHL ice hockey team. It has also hosted the NBA All-Star game three times. With its low cost of living and high quality of life, Orlando is a wonderful place to live and raise a family.
