D.O.O.R. (Deaf Opportunity Out Reach) International's mission is to "bring God's Word and reproducing Christian fellowship to the Deaf of the world (35-40 million). Using reproducible methods, DOOR trains Deaf Christians to do church planting through evangelism,
discipleship, teacher and leader training, and the establishment of Deaf believers' fellowships. In partnership with Wycliffe Global Alliance members and other partners, DOOR assists the Deaf in developing a Chronological Bible Study (CBS) which is developed
in stages: "Know God How?" (32 evangelism story sets) combined with numerous topical studies comprise a "primary" Chronological Bible Study for new Deaf Christians and emerging Deaf fellowships. DOOR has a team of 201 individuals (157 Deaf & 44 Hearing) including
70 Deaf translators, 42 Deaf "2-by-2" team members & 13 Consultants-In-Training. The sign language Bible stories are available on DVD and by viewing www.deafbibles.com.
Reporting to and in partnership with the President and CEO, the Director of Development will develop a strategy for planning, organizing, controlling and implementing all aspects of DOOR’s fundraising program. The Director of Development will collaborate
with the President, CEO, Executive Committee, and VP Ministry to achieve mutually agreed upon budget income goals.
The top priority for the successful candidate will be to build a Major Donor program. The Director of Development will strengthen the existing donors, convert existing prospects to major donors, and expand the number of both prospects and donors in the
major donor category.
- Build and maintain a major donor contact list of 100 to 125 persons/entities who can give a gift of $2,500 or more per year with a significant number of gifts being $25,000 or more per year.
- Cultivate this list according to Moves Management principles.
- Writing/develop all necessary materials, including, but not limited to: case statements, proposals, feedback reports (once every 4 months), and whatever else might be required to complete the donor relationship cycle.
- Responsible for gathering prospect and donor research.
- Must travel significantly to achieve at least 250 personal visits per year.
- Organize a “vision” trip each year with 4 to 8 potential major donors to visit either Kenya or India.
- Coordinate social media strategies to insure all possible communication links to donors and potential donors are utilized.
- Develop a planned giving component to DOOR’s overall fundraising strategy.
- Involve the President, CEO and, where appropriate, Board members with donor development.
- Assist individual missionaries as they seek to raise their yearly support.
- Participate in professional development organizations, conferences and Board meetings.
- Perform other duties as requested by the CEO.
Skills and Abilities
- Entrepreneurial spirit, positive attitude and energy to implement new strategies and meet goals.
- Comfortable using the phone to cultivate donors and schedule appointments.
- In-depth understanding of fundraising concepts including appropriate solicitation techniques.
- Strong interpersonal and human relations skills.
- Must be able to interact with a wide range of people and beliefs.
- Skilled at understanding an appropriate “ask” and closing the gift. Must be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Advanced computer skills with experience using MS Office and databases.
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred.
- 3 to 5 years personal successful experience in major gift fundraising desirable.
- Must demonstrate successful experience in acquiring new prospects through referrals, marketing efforts or other means, as well as developing successful cultivation and solicitation strategies for newly-acquired prospects.
- Committed to learning and promoting Christian work among the Deaf of our world.
- Previous exposure with the Deaf community (or cross-cultural situations) preferred.
- Previous planned giving experience is a plus.
- Willing to travel throughout West Michigan, Northern Indiana and Southern Illinois, with occasional evening and weekend presentations. On a scheduled basis may involve some overnight trips to other locations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments and tasks.
- Must be willing to relocate to the greater Grand Rapids MI, area to further develop DOOR’s donor base.
- C.F.R.E. (or similar professional certification) preferred, but not required.
