Job Summary:

The Director of Finance will have a unique opportunity to help Visalia First achieve its vision of making disciples by working to help steward and secure the resources that God has blessed Visalia First with. This position will lead the Accounting Department, Finance Team and ensure that Visalia First is accurately accounting for, tracking, and reporting on its use of resources consistent with its budgeted priorities. He/she will analyze financial data and provide key summary information to help support the Church’s key decision-makers. The person serving is this position must also understand tax compliance issues related to non-profit organizations, including payroll, and excessive benefit transactions.


Job Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for managing the Finance function of the church; Overseeing the Finance Team, and working directly with HR to manage day-to-day financial operations, GL/AP, income processing budgeting, audit prep and insurance, and general liability and workman’s comp. Additional responsibilites include:

  • Prepare and analyze data and provide information in a timely, consistent and accurate manner to support the Church’s strategic decision-making needs
  • Provide analysis of financial trends affecting the church
  • Help identify areas of concern
  • Ensure internal controls and GAAP compliance are adhered to


2. Work with ministries on the yearly budgeting process

  • Consolidate ministry budgets into yearly program budget
  • Project income estimates for income budget
  • Project overhead including salary/benefits estimates for overhead budget
  • Input budget into financial software and track actual to budget


3. Prepare financial statements and reports

  • Maintenance of General Ledger
  • Bank reconciliations
  • Preparation of monthly financial reports for Management and Trustees
  • Prepare routine and special donor reports for Lead Pastor
  • Participate with Lead Pastor and Church Fund Development Consultant in the development and evaluation of strategic funding ideas and initiatives
  • Preparation of audit statements
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of income and expenses
  • Communicate with key ministry leaders on financial health of their ministries
  • Prepare weekly giving report
  • Monthly "soft" close and final monthly close and prepare financial reports for Trustees
  • Year-end close
  • Prepare 1099’s
  • Work with and prepare all necessary data and other information needed to assist Church external Audit Team
  • Review payroll for approval


4. Oversee Finance Team

  • Ensure that the finance team is working efficiently and has the necessary resources to do the job
  • Review policy/procedures and creation of internal manual
  • Provide semiannual reviews of the team
  • Set goals and expectations


5. Prepares quarterly/annual tax statements and oversee the year end giving statements


These duties are not exclusive and with consideration of job requirements and other skills, the job description can be added to or taken away from at the discretion of immediate supervisor.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Accounting Department Team

  • Work in conjunction with HR Director

Job Requirements:  

  • Proficient in MS Office, QuickBooks, and donor-base tools
  • Must be organized and detail-oriented
  • Have full knowledge of the difference between Cash (budget base reporting) and GAAP (accrual accounting)
  • A growing Christian as supported by a signed statement of faith from Visalia First
  • An on-going display of Christ-like behavior, treating others with dignity, respect, compassion, and integrity
  • Regular attendance in ministry and worship at Visalia First
  • Regular, timely attendance in the workplace

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Completion of Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, or Accounting
  • MBA is a plus
  • Three to five years experience in a senior-level finance or accounting position

Working Conditions:

Visalia First Assembly is a non-profit religious organization with normal working conditions for an office environment. Work may require weekends and/or extended evening work.
