Title:  Director of Operations, Michigan Overnight Camp (MION)

Classification:  Full Time, Salaried

Reports to: MION Director

Direct Reports: Food Service Manager, Facilities and Properties Supervisors, Accommodations Supervisor

Key Relationships: Director of the Great Lakes Region, Director of People and Organizational Development, Indiana Camp Operations Director, MION Retreats Director, and the Safety/Risk Management Team


Position Summary:

As a member of SpringHill Camps Leadership Team, the Operations Director of the MION Camp ensures the ministry’s year-round camp facilities and support services are in excellent condition, meeting or exceeding licensing and accreditation requirements, to maximize their safe and effective use by campers, renters, staff and volunteers involved in camp programs. Ensures the integrity and professional image of Camp operations consistent with SpringHill’s mission, purpose and objectives.


Principle Duties and Job Functions:

  • Serve as the Team Leader overseeing maintenance, accommodations, properties, transportation, medical and food service departments
  • Serve as the safety officer for Michigan Overnight Camp tracking, responding and reporting incidents, mitigating risks through standard processes and procedures, support staff safety & security training, etc.
  • Oversee the prioritization, planning, and completion of operating capital and capital campaign projects
  • Coach, develop, and train staff in functional areas of responsibility
  • Work with Food Service Manager  to develop economical staffing patterns and menus, and to ensure the safety, health, and good repair of dining room facilities
  • Work with Facilities and Site Supervisors to set project priorities and coordinate resources, and maintain a record keeping system for facilities and grounds 
  • Performs preventative building and grounds assessments to ensure buildings and utilities are well functioning.  Quickly respond to conditions that might cause personal injury or damage to property
  • Interface with the ministry’s insurance company as needed to assure appropriate coverage are maintained
  • Assist in design and functionality of new construction, capital projects, renovations and related activities
  • Work with camp director to develop and implement a multi-year site plan
  • Manage all associated account lines and perform within budget
  • Track, report and respond effectively to all incidents of liability with campers, guests or visitors to leadership and provides input to solutions and provides all record keeping of such actions 
  • Provides leadership in Emergency Disaster planning and execution in order to safeguard lives and property from threats due to weather, fire, and injury including homeland security requirements
  • Maintains compliance with OSHA, waste water permitting, Fire Code regulations, MSDS, chemical spill clean ups, blood borne pathogens, exposures and pandemics
  • Maintains Department of transportation regulations for vehicle and driver safety, including inspections, CDL, Drug testing, and physical record keeping, staff training, etc.
  • Deals effectively and professionally with a variety of persons, in meetings, over the telephone and by message, both within and outside of organization (i.e. staff, volunteers, police, government workers, contractors,  personnel, campers, guests, persons with complaints, the general public, host partners, etc.)


Experience and Qualifications Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and passion for SpringHilll’s mission and philosophy of ministry
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, management or a related field is required
  • 10+ years experience managing operations, facilities, grounds or similar services
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building codes and safety regulations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 5+ years leadership and supervisory experience
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the organization’s auto insurance policy

  • Ability to work in inclement weather or during disaster situations
  • Ability to handle restricted and confidential information in a professional manner and always maintain the information as such

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Must live near (within 10 minutes) of Camp property and be accessible 24/7 for emergency response
  • Evening and weekend work is periodically required
  • Ability and willingness to drive to other SpringHill program locations, as required
  • Must be able to lift, bend, twist, and push and pull loads
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, and occasionally 50-100 lbs with assistance
  • Good eye-hand coordination
