Despite its humble beginnings, Lakewood Church has surpassed the wildest dreams of its founding pastors John & Dodie Osteen. Beginning in 1959 with only 90 people, Lakewood Church grew to 8,000 during John Osteen’s lifetime and then to over 40,000 under the leadership of his son, Pastor Joel Osteen. Since Pastors Joel and Victoria stepped up to pastor the church at the unexpected passing of John Osteen in 1999, Lakewood Church has experienced explosive growth and is now considered America’s largest church. Today, Lakewood Church has thriving ministries for children, youth, young adults, and families, including a ministry for special needs children and a healing ministry led by Dodie Osteen. The vision of Lakewood Church is to use every avenue available to make a difference in the lives they touch with the transforming power of the Gospel. Reaching the lost, equipping believers, building relationships through ministry, and transforming communities and nations through missions and media – they believe the future starts today.
