TMI—The Episcopal School of Texas, a 6th-12th grade, independent, coeducational, college-preparatory, day/boarding school, with a student population of approximately 470, seeks an accomplished professional to lead the school’s advancement programs. In order to lead staff and volunteers in building a robust and broad community of support for TMI it is important for the candidate to embrace the mission of TMI, “to provide an excellent educational community, with values based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, challenging motivated students to develop their full potential in service and leadership." The four pillars of the school are also central to its mission and those are: Academics, Athletics, Military and Spirituality.

The school has an annual budget of $10 million, annual restricted and unrestricted giving of $1.5 million, and a growing endowment and planned gift program. The board is planning a capital campaign in the near future with a significant goal. Founded in 1893, TMI is celebrating its 120th year of educating Servant Leaders.

TMI is the flagship school of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas and the oldest Episcopal Church-sponsored, college-prep school in the Southwest. Formerly known as Texas Military Institute, it offers an optional JROTC program, designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction, and 5-day or 7-day boarding for students in grades 8-12. The top student in the first graduating class in 1897, General Douglas MacArthur, was one of many distinguished alumni.

The Director of Advancement reports to the Headmaster and works closely with the Advancement Committee and the Board of Governors to advance TMI’s mission through annual giving and special events, alumni relations, endowed gifts, planned giving, and capital campaigns. He/she will assume lead responsibility for managing and growing an existing donor base of parents, alumni, and community members. He/she must be committed to the skillful building and maintaining of relationships, both internally (able to work closely with Head, Board, staff, and key volunteers) and externally (willing to spend a significant amount of time cultivating and stewarding donors, including time devoted to travel).

The Director of Advancement will have significant responsibility and time commitment away from campus engaged in major gift development and capital campaign solicitation (the Associate Director of Advancement will complement the Director by assuming responsibility for successful management of the day-to-day, on-campus activities of the advancement staff.

The Director of Advancement also has primary responsibility for the school’s communications, publications, and public relations (with input from the Director of Admission).

The Director will supervise a staff of six professionals (5.5 FTE) and coordinate the work of volunteer groups (including Family Association, Alumni Association, and Booster Club). The successful candidate will have significant advancement experience and demonstrated success in:

  • Working in concert with the Board and Headmaster in identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors
  • Large capital campaigns
  • Major gift donor management (Moves Management, or similar)
  • Major gift solicitations
  • Annual giving campaigns
  • Alumni relations
  • Implementation of planned giving programs
  • Donor recognition events and meaningful gift acknowledgment
  • Working with a team of colleagues sharing mutual goals

In sum, the successful candidate will have the ability to execute a complete program of fundraising and have excellent management and communication skills. Familiarity with independent schools and/or local connections/memberships is a plus. Salary and benefits are highly competitive.
