Job Description:

Thousand Pines Outdoor School operates on the grounds of the Thousand Pines Christian Camp & Conference Center, which is a 240 acre site located in Crestline, California at an elevation of 5,000 feet. The mission of Thousand Pines Outdoor School is to develop students' appreciation for nature through hands on experience in an outdoor environment while also developing an appreciation for others through a variety of team building and community oriented activities. 


We are currently hiring enthusiastic instructors for the coming fall trimester who want to serve in an outdoor setting, and who see real value in students being able to experience ”the real world” beyond the traditional classroom. Everything we do at the Thousand Pines Outdoor School- in the cabin, the dining room, or on the trail – seeks to encourage our campers to investigate what this world is all about and how to live in it.  We also seek to facilitate each staff member's professional growth through regular staff training and events. Job Title:  Outdoor Education Program Instructor                                   

Department:  Thousand Pines Outdoor Ed                                   

Status: Full Time/Seasonal

Reports To:  Program Manager                                                              

Dates: September 23, 2013 – June 5, 2014


Essential Functions

  1. Instructs groups of students in various activities on a 4 or 5 day program: Monday/Tuesday through Friday according to the Outdoor School schedule
  2. Performs duties and/or participates in activities including:
    1. Teaching the Thousand Pines Outdoor Science School curriculum
    2. Leading various program elements such as: rock wall, archery, craft, songs, games, skits, dances, and team building exercises
    3. Enforcing dining hall standards during meals
    4. Supervising a cabin group of students overnight


Additional Functions

  1. Attends TPOSS team meetings
  2. Provides supportive leadership for TPOSS when necessary
  3. Assists in routine cleaning of program meeting spaces
  4. Provides student First Aid and basic health care when necessary

  1. Minimum education of a Bachelors Degree
  2. Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certifications (must possess or be signed up for a class upon hire, certification needs to last through the season)
  3. Satisfactory criminal background check, fingerprinting, and drug test
  4. Full agreement with TPOSS mission, values, and dress code
  5. Valid driver’s license or state issued I.D.


Physical Demands

  1. Abilities sufficient to carry out the essential functions of the job including frequent and sometimes strenuous hiking and working in an outdoor setting during all types of weather conditions
  2. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs


Additional Information


Hours: Full Time/Seasonal

Dates: September 23, 2013 – June 5, 2014 (3 trimesters)

Pay Rate: $80.00/day ($120.00/day when both teaching and supervising a cabin of students overnight)

Housing and Meals: Provided during the week and available on weekends for a nominal fee
