Faith Network Job Description: Director of Science Horizons

Reports to Executive Director

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Science Horizons is responsible for the overall administration of the Science Horizons program.

Responsibilities:

¨       Develop and oversee programs that support the teaching of science in selected Oakland Unified School District schools, including after-school programs, classroom presentations, and field trips.

¨       Oversee the Future Scientists Career Pipeline:

o    Provide hands-on enrichment opportunities designed to introduce students to the world of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math)

o    Identify, nurture and follow high-aptitude students having a keen interest in STEM-related subjects from elementary grades through high school

o    Develop opportunities for students to explore careers in STEM fields by seeking out internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing and in-service learning, in collaboration with East Bay community partners

o    Focus primarily, but not exclusively, on West Oakland STEM Corridor schools: Hoover, MLK Jr., Prescott and Lafayette Elementary, West Oakland Middle and McClymonds High

 

¨       Identify/develop best-practice evaluation metrics to measure impact vis-à-vis intended outcomes

¨       Develop and maintain strong working relationships with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, e.g.,  students, parents, district and school personnel, businesses and corporations, universities, science-education organizations, faith-based organizations, government agencies, and funding organizations

¨       Develop and manage the Science Horizons budget

¨       Supervise Science Horizons Program Coordinator

¨       Recruit, train, oversee and nurture a team of STEM volunteers

¨       Develop and oversee an Advisory Team comprised of STEM partners and stakeholders for purposes of planning, coordinating and evaluating

¨       Perform additional responsibilities as defined by the Executive Director

 

Qualifications/Skills:

 

¨       Skills and temperament to work and communicate effectively with a diverse array of constituents, including members of the faith and business communities, school personnel, and with people of diverse ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds

¨       Prior experience in science education at multiple levels

¨       Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills

¨       Collaborative work style

¨       An infectious passion for science and science education

¨       A strong network of contacts in the Oakland community, in the Oakland schools, as well as among key contributors to STEM education in the Bay Area

¨       Good networking skills for community outreach; ability to establish positive relationships with East Bay public schools

 

¨       Computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheet, database management, desktop publishing, Internet use)

¨       Variable hours, including some evenings and weekends

 

Desirable Qualifications/Skills:

 

¨       Teaching experience and graduate work in science and science education

¨       Experience developing standards-based science programs

¨       Experience in grant writing and management of grants

 

Salary

¨       To be negotiated, based on experience and background

 

¨       25 - 40 hours per week, occasional weekends/evenings
