Job Description:

United Marriage Encounter/Marriage Encounter Support Foundation is actively seeking a full-time Executive Director, with strong organizational leadership and interpersonal communication skills; committed to the Christian faith, values and ideals; and has an intrinsic desire and passion to build and strengthen marriages.  The successful candidate must be able to serve as the public relations presence for this ministry; manage its financial health; build healthy volunteer "core communities" located throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe; manage the marriage encounter weekends and provide staff supervision for the full/part time staff.

The Executive Director will report to and be supervised by the International Executive Couple (Chair Couple/President).  The Executive Director will also make appropriate reports to the Board and to the Executive Committee.


The International Executive Couple will advise and help prioritize ministry needs when there are conflicting or excessive demands on staff time.


Question or concerns regarding responsibilities or the relationships with or allocation of responsibilities among the Staff Directors should be addressed to the International Executive Couple and ultimately to the Executive Committee.


Principal Responsibilities:


    Serve as the public relations presence for the ministry. 10%


              Build relationships with other related organizations to partner in ministry


              Represent the Ministry to the public and members


    Manage the Financial health of the Ministry. 30%


             Provide financial oversight, including preparation of the budget and accountability for staying  within budget, performance reports, and program monitoring.  Includes USA and International banking transactions.


             Oversight of all fund raising efforts, supporting current programs and developing new ones as appropriate.


             Develop and implement planned giving and major gifts programs.


             Support of the recommendations of the Development and Finance Committee


             Serve as the staff liaison to the Investment Committee and the Development and Finance Committee.


    Build healthy communities 30%


             Provide direction for Staff in Community and Ministry Support Recommend and execute ongoing marketing/promotional strategies that can be used by the communities to encourage inviting


             Provide annual reviews, work load balancing and professional development.


             Support the Staff by establishing relationships with Community Leadership  


    Manage the 48 hour weekend experience and staff supervision:  30%


              Provide leadership and  direction for staff supporting Team and Weekend Support


              Provide annual reviews, work load balancing and professional development.


              Set targets and budget for weekend cost.


              Help secure adequate resources for Board approved weekends


              Manage Expansion Efforts


    Responsibility (percentage) may be adjusted to better fit needs of the organization.




    Christian faith and member of a Trinity-based church.

    College degree and/or demonstrated success in the business or the non-profit worlds.

    Encountered on a United Marriage Encounter Weekend.

    Demonstrated fund raising, development, marketing, and public relations experience or some combination of these.

    Experience as a board member or in reporting to or working with a Board of Directors.

    Technology experienced, can use technology effectively and efficiently. Knowledge and expertise of Microsoft Workstation applications such as MS Office Professional, Excel, Publisher, etc.

    Willingness to travel extensively.

    Effective leadership and team interaction skills

    Strong inter-personal and relational skills

    Strong communication skills

    Primary residence will be within driving distance of the UME-MESF international office in Muscatine, Iowa.

    Be self-motivated and self-directed.

    Ability to think creatively

    Facilitate a culture of information sharing, relationships building and trust

    A role model of Christian marriage, Christian ministry and servant leadership.

    Provide three references that can articulate your qualification and ability to perform this position.


 Preferred experience:


    Director/Manager experience.

    Significant volunteer experience in United Marriage Encounter activities.

    Experience developing and managing a budget for a non-profit or a for-profit business

    Ability to make formal and informal presentations

    Proven project management skills

    Proven experience in knowledge management concepts and philosophies.


 Work Schedule and Locations.


      a. This is a salaried professional position that requires work as reasonably needed to get the job done.  It is not an 8-to-5 or 40-hours-a-week job.  Normal work hours will average significantly more than 40 hours a week.  Hours will be somewhat variable and not expected to keep formal time records.


      b. The primary office is the international office in Muscatine, Iowa, USA. Travel to UME Communities and other locations as needed will be planned and reimbursed.


      c. It is expected for the new Executive Director to spend a substantial amount of time in the international office during an initial period of service as Executive Director.
