2013 DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR POSITION

HOPE FOR THE CITY

Hope For The City is a 501c(3) humanitarian aid organization that utilizes corporate surplus to fight poverty, hunger and disease. The Minnesota-based, non-profit collects overstock products from top retailers, medical companies and food distributors nationwide and donates the items to local, national, and international organizations that serve people in need. Since its inception, Hope for the City has distributed approximately $525 million in wholesale value of goods.

JOB SUMMARY

The Development Director is responsible for all donor development including annual giving program, major gifts program, cultivation and stewardship efforts.  In this fundraising role, networking and  building successful relationships with supporters  is crucial. This position is also responsible for overseeing events, marketing, grant writing and data base management.  This position will strengthen partnerships and carry out effective fundraising activities to ensure ever-increasing support from individuals, corporations, and civic organizations. In concert with the grant writer, he/she will oversee foundation and government grant solicitation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Business development (fundraising) is a primary task
  • Participate in the creation of a new annual fundraising plan and the implementation of new and existing development efforts that will generate additional revenue streams to reinvest in ongoing programs and assist with future growth of the organization.
  • Develop and maintain active and positive working relationships internally and externally for HFTC.
  • Develop and implement annual giving campaigns (board solicitation, volunteer base, corporate partnerships (cash, not product), etc. as well as evaluate all fundraising activities with an eye to ROI.
  • Develop a plan to meet face to face every existing donor giving over over$1000 dollars annually.
  • Develop and implement major gift program focusing on individuals donors of $10,000 and above or $25,000 over five years.
  • Identify and implement internal systems, policies and processes to support a move to a more aggressive and diverse fundraising and communication effort.
  • Monitor donations and oversee a process of multiple acknowledgements to donors.
  • Create a process for prospect cultivation and donor stewardship program (including site visits) to assist in new donor growth and retention of existing donors.
  • As appropriate, work with financial advisors to provide planned giving opportunities to major donors.
  • Assure that each HFTC board member is involved in fundraising efforts.
  • Responsible for overseeing HFTC special events (including annual Gala, "Ask" Luncheon, Golf Tournament and donor cultivation events) and developing relationships with individual and corporate sponsors
  • Oversee all marketing efforts by the marketing associate; including print material, communication, social marketing, web site management and events.
  • Oversee team efforts in all aspects of E-tapestry data base management, ensuring proper uses for all fundraising functions and initiatives.
  • Participate in HFTC's overall planning and strategize activities. Represent HFTC at community events.
  • Attend board meetings and other appropriate meetings and special events to further the awareness of HFTC and development activities.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in hunger relief programs.
  • Researches and understands the local non-profit market and donor base. By knowing as much about a potential donor and other like non-profits makes it easier to identify opportunity and achieve success.
  • Delivers excellent customer service and keeps donors informed on the progress of the operation as well as providing relevant information concerning the use of the donor’s money, as appropriate.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4 year college degree or higher
  • 8-10 years of professional development experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing annual giving efforts (including coordinating special events & securing corporate sponsorships and creating annual campaigns that focus on individual giving), major gifts and cultivation and stewardship efforts
  • Working knowledge of funding community
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all levels of donors and prospects. Possess tact, diplomacy and strong attention to detail
  • Exhibits entrepreneurial approach to job
  • Proven skill in volunteer recruitment, management and motivation - individually and in a committee environment
  • Results oriented
  • Strong computer skills: database management, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and donor management software
  • Ability to organize a variety of projects and activities simultaneously
  • An entrepreneurial leader with the ability to bring in new ideas and programs that drive positive organizational results.

Demonstrated financial management and budgeting abilities — preferably in a nonprofit arena.
