Job Description:



Job Summary:
Responsible for preparing accurate and timely interim and year-end financial statements and general accounting, including monthly and yearly closing of accounting books, preparing adjusting journal entries, and maintaining balance sheet schedules and ledgers, GL account and bank reconciliations and a variety of other duties to support the financial operations of the company. Demonstrate ownership for the integrity, accuracy, and informational quality of financial information.

Essential Job Functions:
• Prepare accurate and timely internal financial statements and assist with the preparation and analysis of monthly departmental budget vs. actual reports
• Coordinate month and year end process to close the company’s financial records
• Create month and year end adjusting journal entries and maintain monthly journal entry log
• Maintain company general ledger, reconciling GL accounts and preparing supporting documents/schedules
• Review and post daily general ledger journal entries created from sub ledger transactions
• Prepare various financial reports as requested
• Maintain company cash ledgers, recording miscellaneous cash transactions and reconciling account balances to monthly bank statements
• Provide weekly cash reports using on-line banking and other reporting methods
• Deposit and record miscellaneous receipts
• Reconcile Petty Cash
• Monitor company credit card check out process
• Assist with preparation of various state sales tax returns
• Maintain company’s royalty ledgers and coordinate royalty accounting activities
• Identify, research and resolve accounting errors/issues
• Contribute to and participate in creating solutions for transaction corrections
• Prepare various financial reports as requested
• Prepare credit applications and miscellaneous accounting forms as requested
• Interpret and communicate accounting transaction procedures to other department personnel
• Document accounting policies, procedures and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility
• Assist with annual budgeting process
• Assist with the preparation for the company’s annual external review
• Assist with annual archiving process of accounts payable records
• Cross train/provide back-up for end of day procedures
• Cross train/provide back-up for fixed asset and project cost accounting and accounts payable processing
• Cross train/provide back-up accounting services for associated HHP shareholder-owned business entities
• Provide back-up receptionist coverage as assigned or needed
• File/archive financial documents
• Other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Understanding of full-cycle and general accounting practices
• Intermediate to advanced experience with PC, Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook or similar programs
• Experience with accounting software packages and report writing software, Great Plains and FRx experience preferred
• Ability to adapt previous experience to publishing industry
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work well with others within and outside of the company
• Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
• Ability to work collaboratively with other team members
• Ability to work accurately, efficiently and productively in daily work to meet deadlines
• Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality
• Strong work ethic


Qualifications: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job. Typical qualifications would be:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent from an accredited university preferred
• Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in general accounting practices, including general ledger experience, AP and AR experience, and royalty and cost accounting experience
• Knowledge of publishing industry helpful

This position is located in an office environment and uses PCs, ten key, electronic spreadsheets, Great Plains software, MS Office software.
