Stand out. Make it different but not tacky.

By: Luke Miller

In today's market, it's not unusual for an employer to receive hundreds of resumes for a single posting. In our experience, the vast majority of these resumes are formatted according to the basic Microsoft Word resume template. We're not all designers, and there's certainly nothing wrong with using a template.

Your resume, however, is your first impression and your first opportunity to stand out above the rest. Look for creative ways to communicate your experience and education by altering the basic template, or by searching for alternate templates online. Don't get too whacky, though. Give your resume some personality, but keep it professional. Use standard fonts like Arial, Helvetica, etc. Avoid script or comic fonts. Also, avoid bright colors and clip art.

Use your resume to communicate to your future employer that you're unique and a standout applicant.
